This is a exquisite compact version of the events, Gacy subjected Chicago to in the 1970's. He had mislead people in his life for years. Chicago PD, even thought he was truthful, even though he was suspect in several cases. No one saw through his generous, charitable mask until way too many had suffered at his hands. Even now with him dead for twenty years, there are families still mourning the loss of their sons to a madman. And even worse nine families who will never be named, that is so tragic the not knowing.

The author is semi-literate. Many grammatical errors. It was a turnoff to think the book made it to publication without somebody proofreading it.
Other than that, I thought the timeline was well constructed.

A woman worth fighting for…

Wolf shifter Teresa is blown away by her packmate Ryan’s honesty about his past and his rare empathic powers. She wants him in her bed—and her life. The only problem: Ryan insists they wait, because the last thing he wants is to recreate the hellish family he grew up in. Frustrated, Teresa jumps at the chance to assist a packmate off the ranch—far away from Ryan.

On the way, their vehicle is run off the road—and it wasn’t an accident. Ryan rushes to Teresa’s side, determined to protect her. But there’s a dangerous enemy lurking in the shadows, and if Ryan doesn’t break out of his old thinking and put his faith in his and Teresa’s love—and their ability to overcome obstacles together—it will be too late.

Katie Reus is the New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of the Red Stone Security series, the Moon Shifter series and the Deadly Ops series. Great novella!
By Amy (So Many Reads)
Protective Instinct by Katie Reus is the perfect story for Ryan and Teresa. I really enjoy the entire Moon Shifter series with both novels and novellas. Reus is able to connect the overall storyline within the short stories. Protective Instinct was just as entertaining as the other books. There is the perfect blend of romance, suspense and paranormal aspects to the story. Once you open one of these books, you rarely close it without finishing. Reus writes in a way that pulls you in from the first page and won’t let you go until the end.

Ryan and Teresa have been dancing around the whole mating/bonding thing for a long time and it is driving Teresa insane. Ryan has his fears which Teresa understands in her head to a point but really thinks he can overcome them and tries everything she can do to do just that. Eventually she can’t think of anything else to tell or show him how serious she is about wanting to be his for the rest of their lives. She is tired of waiting on him. Of course, just then, disaster strikes and the pack has to move into action and all thoughts of romance are pushed to the side for Teresa and Ryan.

Reus handles this short story fantastically. The romance between Teresa and Ryan plays out very nicely and the passion and intimacy fits the story and characters well. The balance of suspense and romance is perfect and the appearance of other characters adds to the storyline. I love reading about past romances and learning about ones to come in future stories.

If you like paranormal romance, I really can’t say enough good things about Protective Instinct as a novella and the entire Moon Shifter series. I will continue to auto-read the Moon Shifter series books for as long as Reus writes them. They are highly recommended!

Good Addition to the series
By Danielle Taylor
3 1/2 Stars. This is a novella in Katie Reus' Moon Shifter Series and falls in right after book 5 Hunter Reborn. This novella centers around Teresa and Ryan who played a big role in Hunter Reborn and their relationship actually started in that book. You could read this as a stand alone but would recommend reading Hunter Reborn first. In Hunter Reborn Ryan started to accept how he felt about Teresa and let her know that he wanted to be with her. He had revealed his past and what had kept him from pursuing her in that book as well. In this book, Ryan is still holding back on bonding with Teresa. He is letting his past and what happened between his parents (his dad being just like him) effect his relationship with Teresa. He wants to be absolutely convinced that Teresa wants to bond with him so he holds back physically with her. Teresa is frustrated and upset because she knows she wants to be bonded to Ryan and wants him to trust her. She is finally so frustrated that she goes to help another single unmated wolf in the pack on an overnight trip. Ryan realizing this chases after her. When Teresa leaves the ranch she is put in danger from an enemy of the pack.

I just didn't buy Ryan pushing Teresa away so much considering he is an empathy. He should be able to tell that her feelings were real and solid. I kept thinking he has a gift that should let him understand her and feel that his decisions are hurting her. It was frustrating. I actually enjoyed reading more about Aldric and Natalie more.

This isn't my favorite shifter series but it is enjoyable.

Protective Instinct - Shifting Dangers
By Alima Livzletlivz
Even Shifters have problems of love, especially when the alpha male is stubborn and pig-headed like Ryan. In the next installment of the Moon Shifter Series, “Protective instinct”, Katie Reus gives her ever-protective hero the fear of his life, as she throws his mate Theresa into danger.

Theresa and Ryan may have accepted their feelings for each other, but the stubborn alpha holds back the ultimate mating due to his painful past. Frustration leads to arguments and barriers and a revengeful vampire has Ryan rethinking his idiotic behavior of keeping Theresa at an arm’s length. A threat to Theresa’s life brings out Ryan’s protective instincts and the separation and fear of losing is mate gets his head out his rear to claim her forever.

Intense, steamy, and passionate, “Protective Instinct” is a short novella in the series that leaves us with the satisfaction of reading another charismatic story of Katie Reus’s creative and mesmerizing paranormal. And I’ve never been disappointed with her writing prowess, and she is a master at keeping her narration enchanting and captivating.

Freedom from Nicotine - The Journey Home, by John R. Polito

Looking for the "Easy Way to Stop Smoking," vaping, chewing or dipping? Wish you could succeed and "Never Take Another Puff," vape, dip or chew? Although "Freedom from Nicotine - The Journey Home" (FFN-TJH) was not written by the late Allen Carr or Joel Spitzer, it certainly could have been. The common thread between all three books is the message that coming home is vastly more do-able, and far more wonderful than the user's frightened, misguided and enslaved mind believes. It wasn't that you couldn't quit and stay free, but that you hadn't, as yet, been properly schooled as to why you really use. FFN-TJH was written by John R. Polito, a former 3 pack-a-day smoker, and the 1999 founder of the popular quitting site WhyQuit.com. He's also director of both Turkeyville, Facebook's popular quit smoking support group, and Freedom, the oldest and still most focused cold turkey support site. John's 13-year mentor, Joel Spitzer is arguably the most studied smoking cessation counselor alive. WhyQuit's education director since 2000, Joel's core lessons provide the foundation for this book. Having taught cessation full-time for more than 40 years, Joel had presented more than 100 two-week, six-session quitting clinics while Allen Carr was still smoking five packs-a-day. Like John, Allen discovered the easy way the hard way. Allen's final book before dying was called "Scandal." Written the week he was diagnosed with the lung cancer that claimed him, in it he states, "I read an interesting article in the British Medical Journal recently by someone not on the payroll of the pharmaceutical industry. It caught my eye because it was entitled: 'The NRT cessation charade continues.' The author is an American called John Polito who works as a nicotine cessation educator, which means he is honest about trying to stop the source of the addiction, rather than maintain it." Educate your natural instincts. Live the magic of becoming smarter than nicotine's influence upon your brain. Discover why knowledge isn't just power but a quitting method. Just one brave step, yes you can!

Amazing Book
By Gail V.
I had made the decision to quit smoking, cold turkey, several times. I tried 5 times over 10 years and failed after days, or weeks, each and every time as did not understand the nature of the addiction. I stopped again for a 6th time; desperate to give up these hideous cancer sticks and my wretched, lingering cough. 30 hours in to the quit, at the toughest point really, I was searching for reading material to help me through. Luckily for me, I found John's book and downloaded it to my eReader. I read it, in total, three times during those first few weeks of my quit. As John says, "Knowledge is Power" and he packs knowledge into this book. And it does impart power. And I am still a successful non-smoker and always will be. I will Never take another Puff as am no longer enslaved.

A book you will read many times over
By Joy
and that will change the way you think about smoking. After thirty-six years of active addiction, and many failed attempts, I wanted desperately to quit smoking, but I had no idea how. I found the thought of living without cigarettes paralyzing. This book helped me to understand nicotine addiction. It helped me to believe that somewhere deep inside there was a long forgotten non-smoker who was waiting anxiously to be found. It showed me a very simple formula to become free, that would also allow me to remain free. It provided me with the courage to take that first step forward. It taught me to celebrate my choice to not smoke, not to fear it. Today, with more than thirteen years of smobriety, I can say that the knowledge I received in this book helped me to save my good health, and ultimately, my life. If you are an active smoker, there is a place that you cannot imagine exists. It is a place where freedom from nicotine is lasting, and the comfort found in that freedom is complete. It is so much closer than you think. This book can lead you there, and it can keep you there.

Finally! Real help to quit smoking!
By Linda Little
I smoked for 35 years, I wanted to quit all the time, I tried hypnosis, patches, aversion therapy, acupuncture nothing worked. Never could figure out why, then one day I stumbled on Freedom from Nicotine while just surfing the Internet. It fascinated me, I read the book while smoking, a re read my favourite parts. I found that I wanted to try this new and educated method of cold turkey quitting. I was blown away to find out that I was a addict, just as addicted as I was abusing alcohol or drugs. Nicotine had made me a slave and I didn't know it, until I read all about it in John Polito's ebook.
Armed with knowledge I quit. Scared to death, but now eight years later I thank this man for giving knowledge to kick the habit. For giving me rules to stay quit, and I thank him for my life and highly recommend this very readable book to anyone that smokes.

Having Patience

It's his wedding night and James Camplyon, Earl of Somerset, can't wait to bed his new countess. But while it's understandable that his bride would be nervous on their wedding night, what surprises James is that Patience isn't flat-out terrified. Unwilling to force himself on her, James instead gives Patience a box of salacious novels and instructs her to pick a scene for them to act out each night. Patience discovers she loves giving up control to her husband, but still she holds back. It will take all of James's patience to strip away the layers and discover the source of his wife's fears before he can truly have Patience, mind, body, and soul.

Debra Glass weaves an erotic spell over readers in the sensual Having Patience. James and Patience are two newlyweds who are a perfect match - or will be once James learns why Patience is petrified of sex. I won't reveal why Patience fears sex, but I will say that Ms. Glass makes her problems understandable. James endeared himself to me with his efforts to get through to Patience. He's by turns tender and commanding, caring and sensual, but Ms. Glass gives him all these traits without making James seem superhuman. It's easy to like both protagonists, which is why I read Having Patience in one sitting, not stopping until James and Patience had their happily ever after. As with all of Ms. Glass's stories, I finished Having Patience a thoroughly satisfied reader and I cannot wait to see what new tale Ms. Glass delivers next!

Having Patience
By Callie
James Earl of Somerset had dreamed of his new wife's body before marriage. On the wedding night Patience Sommerset was not shy as he thought but scared to death of marital relations. This went on for several days.A good friend had the same problem with his new bride so he sent James some risque and erotic books . Patience had to read one each day and underline a passage of what she wanted him to do. Instead of actual intercourse she asked for being tied up and wanted him to control her.She had an incident in her child hood which caused her problems. He is shocked about her requests but gladly carries them out. Lot of erotic scences and loads of spankings. They do work toward love and a HEA. This is my first thing I have read by the author. I will read more if I can find some without any severe bondage BSMD like this story. I just don't care for it my thoughts only.

Flowers from the Storm, by Laura Kinsale

The Duke of Jervaulx was brilliant and dangerous. Considered dissolute, reckless, and extravagant, he was transparently referred to as the ′D of J′ in scandal sheets, where he and his various exploits featured with frequency. But sometimes the most womanising rake can be irresistible, and even his most casual attentions fascinated the sheltered Maddy Timms, quiet daughter of a simple mathematician.

Amazon.com Review
Would you like to convert someone who says romances aren't "real" novels? This book is the one that will do it! Flowers from the Storm is one of the best books in the genre. Christian Langland, Duke of Jerveaux is the ultimate hero. A brilliant mathematician and a complete rake, Christian is a man of contradictions. When a stroke leaves him permanently unable to speak, his family believes him to be mad and relegates him to a sanitarium. Fortunately, Maddy, a righteous Quaker and do- gooder, recognizes that Christian is not insane--he just can't talk! Maddy may not be the most likable heroine you'll encounter, but she has depth and character, and is probably one of the few people you could imagine who would have the patience and understanding to accept and live with Christian's intense anger and frustration. This is a book that defines the word "keeper."

About the Author

Laura Kinsale is a winner and multiple nominee for the Best Book of the Year award given by the Romance Writers of America. She became a romance writer after six years as a geologist -- a career which consisted of getting out of bed in the middle of the night and driving hundreds of miles alone across west Texas to sit at drilling rigs, wear a hard hat, and attempt to boss around oil-covered males considerably larger than herself. This, she decided, was pushing her luck. So she gave all that up to sit in a chair and stare into space for long periods of time, attempting to figure out What-Happens-Next. She and her husband David currently divide their time between Santa Fe, New Mexico, and Texas.

This. Novel. Is. Laura. Kinsale's. Best. Work.
By Judge Tabor
I read this book two years ago and recently decided to re-read all my Laura Kinsale books, saving the best for the last. I do believe I enjoyed this story more the second time around. What a roller coaster ride Ms. Kinsale takes the reader on, as we maneuver through the life of a powerful young duke who was born to prestige, riches, extravagance, the pleasure of women, whatever his heart desired, going on the ride of his life without having an inkling of how quickly everything in one's world can change - often, never to be the same.

Christian Langland, Duke of Jervaulx, is a brilliant mathematician, all around rake, lover of dogs and a faithful friend. When his paramour's husband catches him leaving his wife's bed and calls him out, Christian isn't aware that he's in the middle of his life's greatest crisis. Yes, the strange sensation he has upon leaving his mistress's bed and walking down the stairs was a stroke in the making.

Although struggling mightily with a headache and strange sensations in his arm and hand, Christian keeps his commitments during the next couple of days, including a lecture at the Analytical Society in order to present a paper he and an elderly, blind Quaker gentleman - Mr. Timms, have collaborated upon via messenger. Mr. Timms' daughter, Archimedia (Maddy) knows Christian's reputation and is very concerned he's going to play her kindly, mild-mannered father false just for a big joke. Not so - Christian may be many things, but in his heart, he's serious about math and values his work with Mr. Timms.

However, when he collapses on the dueling field the morning after the lecture, the world believes he has died. It's a blow to Mr. Tibbs who genuinely respected Christian's mind and truly enjoyed their collaborative work.

Fast forward to some weeks later. As Maddy and her father tour her cousin's brand new, high class asylum where Maddy is considering taking a position, she is shocked beyond measure to recognize Christian as one of the residents of the asylum. Further, apparently he's considered to be a dangerous madman without the ability to communicate. But, Christian and Maddy have a strong connection and very shortly she begins to realize Christian is still there, if she can only help him find his way out of the darkness.

**Spoilerish** The rest of the story takes the reader on a fascinating journey that frankly, I don't have words to describe. Not only does Christian struggle with a serious lack of communication, he's had not a single person to stand up for him. He's almost as angry at how he's been treated as he is at his inability to communicate. Some parts of the book are difficult to take in - such as his cruel and callous treatment by staff members at the asylum.

When Maddy decides to throw her support behind Christian, she battles with guilt over whether or not she's compromising the principles of her faith. Thankfully, her faith does give some leeway within the foundational beliefs to allow her to hear from God for herself. Once she has this connection, she decides to throw her lot in with Christian and do whatever she can to help him, but all along the way, she questions whether or not she's making the right choice. Ms. Kinsale has created a very strong character in Christian - possibly the most determined Hero I've ever encountered. To say that Christian drags Maddy kicking and screaming into helping him would be an understatement. Even with his massive disability, he has such drive and determination, heaven help anyone who dares stand in his way. And yet, he desperately needed Maddy. She was an angel sent from heaven. The first time we hear Christian say "Maddy Girl," it's over the top sweet.

It is not smooth sailing. Christian has a competency hearing coming up, he has unethical relatives, a mother who doesn't understand him, so much prejudice against his "sickness" - but he has Maddy Girl and two friends who stick with him through thick and thin. The bottom line is that we find we have several major conflicts - Christian's disability is the primary conflict, but Maddy's religious beliefs are the secondary conflict constantly vying for first place, which affects the third conflict - she's head over heels in love with Christian. Who wouldn't be? I'm rooting for him all the way, even though one might say the life he led previous to the stroke, was not the thing at all. The results of that life come back to bite him on the butt big time and he nearly loses his Maddy Girl.

Truth: I've got about 1800 books on my Kindle with approximately 1300 of that number being historical romance novels - many authored by the best of the best. Having said that, this book is probably among the top 5 and perhaps the #1 of all those romance novels - at least that's how I'm feeling at the moment.

An interesting, original story, badly in need of a good editor
By AS
This is a truly original work, full of interesting characters and very real dangers, but with some serious flaws.

Instead of the strong, powerful, in control hero, at the start of the story, Christian, Duke of Jervaulx, suffers a stroke. Kinsale weaves together the medical reality that we understand today with the early 19th century misconceptions about madness and morality, building a believable hell-on-earth of medical mistreatment and shattered pride. We see all the frustration of a once all-powerful man reduced to helplessness by his inability to communicate, then follow his painful journey as he starts to regain his abilities despite the best efforts of both the self-righteous, pompous do-gooders and the petty, malicious opportunists. This is, however, a journey he could not have made without the help of the pious, but insightful Archimedea Timms, a Quaker woman who see past his expressions of outrage and anger, recognizing that he is still the brilliant mathematician and charming rake she happened to have met before his stroke, and finding the key to helping him recover his voice and his life.

The reformed rake is rarely written well. Casually cruel, arrogant men simply don't become wells of human kindness and humility when they fall in love. With Jervaulx, it works, because he is not changed in his essentials. In part because he wasn't cruel to start with, simply thoughtless, but mostly because he's still arrogant, he's still a man who arranges things to suit himself, and no matter how much he needs Archimedea, he won't give up his position and power for her. In short, he is still the same man, still the product of the immense privilege he was raised with. Not that he hasn't changed at all, but that the changes are those of maturity, as he gives up the shallow affairs and foolish pranks of a wild young man for a more serious and thoughtful life as a happily monogamous married man. It is a believable, meaningful evolution of his character rather than an implausible transformation.

The problem is that this means that Archimedea has to make all the compromises and her character gets lost along the way. When we meet her, she is full of kindness and compassion, honest and forthright, with a strong moral compass. More importantly, she has an unerring ability to see through the rationalizations of pompous men who try to direct her, with what she calls "a quiet obstinacy" that let's her follow her conscience and do what's right despite their domineering and bullying. None of that survives. She becomes a pliable tool, easily turned one way or the other by the lies of manipulative men, she lets herself be pressured into arguing positions she doesn't believe in, and she stops trying to understand the motives of those around her, taking their actions at face value and moralizing instead of communicating. All of which comes across mostly as lazy writing that sacrificed the character for the sake of throwing in an extra plot twist here and a clean resolution there. With a bit of effort, she could have been given plausible motives for her choices. Even more disappointing to me is that, having built the relationship between Archimedea and Christian entirely around their ability to communicate and understand each other, in the end, the author resorts to the tired old cliche of a couple falling apart because they can't be bothered to discuss what's going on and misunderstand each other's intentions.

There are also problems with the writing. Not grammar or phrasing, those are done well, but the story is cluttered up with loose ends and random plot elements that just don't fit into the whole. Midway through the tale, Archimedea sees a neglected garden, one she has dreamed of all her life. Which she then never sees again and is in no way part of the rest of the story. Why throw in this mystical connection to a place if it's not going to be part of her future? Christian repeatedly vows vengeance against those who mistreat him, but there is no follow-up. When he regains his power as a duke, does he simply forget, does he make a noble choice to forgive them, presumably letting them continue in their abusive ways and mistreating others, or are we supposed to assume that he takes action without ever learning what it is?

These flaws are unfortunate as they detract from what is otherwise a really interesting, original story. A good editor could have made this a five-star book.

There's a Reason It's On All the "Best" Lists
By Mrs. Julien
If such a thing exists, Laura Kinsale’s Flowers from the Storm is part of the historical romance canon. It’s a classic of the genre that still appeared at #6 on All About Romance’s 2010 Top 100 List 18 years after publication. I voted on their list for 2013 and included it myself. An intense and sometimes painful read, Flowers from the Storm’s status as one of the best romance novels ever written is completely understandable.

Christian, Duke of Jervaulx is a mathematician and a rake. We meet him acting on both inclinations early in the book: the latter leads to a duel, the former to working with a Quaker academic and his daughter Archimedea, called Maddy. When Christian has an “apoplexy” (stroke) shortly after presenting a mathematical paper, he disappears from their lives until Maddy and her father come to live at a rest home/psychiatric hospital run by her cousin. Christian is a patient and a troublesome one at that. When Maddy meets Christian again, he has been brought very low and is presumed mad. She realises he is “not mad, but maddened” and approaches her cousin saying she has “An Opening”, a spiritual calling, to help Christian. The apoplexy left his language processing centers damaged, but Christian finds he is able to communicate first through mathematics and later with language as Maddy works with him. He recognizes in her a chance to escape the hospital and seeks to do so by any means necessary.

Progressive for The Regency, the hospital is every dehumanizing psychiatric care nightmare rolled into chapters: abuse, restraints, ice baths, isolation. Kinsale shows us Christian’s muddled, struggling mind and I found these sections harrowing and must confess to jumping forward to a less upsetting section of the book to console myself before going back to continue reading chronologically. Mercifully, Maddy and Christian get away from the hospital, but a marriage of convenience is required to prevent him from being sent back as it will give the impression of a fuller recovery.

Romance novels can succeed on many levels, but the best ones have the same thing in common: If a writer can honestly portray the emotional lives of her characters, everything else will fall into place. Flowers from the Storm is not a light-hearted romance, it can be a tough read precisely because the characters are so well drawn and the reader feels their struggles. Christian and Maddy are two puzzle pieces that fit together only because of the situation they find themselves in. In either of their previous lives, their relationship would not have worked. Forced by circumstance, they build something together that is more than they ever would have been separately.

Materializing Literacies in Communities: The Uses of Literacy Revisited, by Kate Pahl

What is a 'contemporary' understanding of literacy practices? How can 'literacy' be explained and situated? This book addresses literacy practices research, understanding it as both material and spatial, based in homes and communities, as well as in formal educational settings. It addresses a need to update the work done on theoretical literacy models, with the last major paradigms such as critical literacies and multiliteracies developed a decade ago.

Kate Pahl draws on case studies to highlight experiences alternate from the traditional representations of literacy. She argues that the affordances of home and familiar spaces offer fertile ground for meaning-making. These resultant literacies are multimodal and linked to space, place and community. An important evaluative resource, this book details a range of methodologies for further researching literacy, describing ethnographic, visual, participatory and ecological approaches, together with connective ethnographies.

This volume is for academics and professional in literacy studies and language and education.

Review
Pahl demonstrates a stunning ability to make the invisible visible. Through a complex network of interrelated narratives of children and ghosts, community stories, and abandoned and inhabited spaces, Pahl invites us to revisit, rethink, re-write and re-imagine what we know and how we make sense of our experiences as educators, as researchers, and ultimately as people. (Catherine Compton-Lilly, University of Wisconsin Madison, USA 2014-06-09)

Pahl's work expands and extends the oft-invoked conception of literacy as a "social practice." Through her research in neighborhoods, schools, and homes, she provides a persuasive and thoughtful exploration of the ways in which the daily reading and writing practices of people grow from - and perpetuate - specific histories, locations, and cultural contexts. She listens carefully to the stories people tell of their lived literacy experiences and, through theories of narrative and aesthetics, enriches our sense of how people encounter and imagine their identities and their communities. What's more, her use of participatory action research methodologies provides a compelling reminder of the need for researchers to collaborate with people in our communities to create knowledge and sustainable social change. (Bronwyn T. Williams, University of Louisville, USA 2014-05-28)

Bringing theories of material culture to literacy studies, Pahl shows us new ways of conceptualising and examining literacies in people's lives. Most importantly, perhaps, the book works ... as a 'provocation' or an 'alternate space of resistance', gently challenging the deficit assumptions about one town that underpin and are reinforced by statistics, and celebrating it as a creative, magical place of stories, textiles, singing, dancing, glitter and gold spangled elephants. The localised, everyday examples provided here present literacies as inevitably inflected by broad social, economic and political movements, but also entwined with memory and hope. The book is a powerful response to those that seek to de-humanise people and places for political purposes. (Cathy Burnett, Sheffield Institute of Education, UK 2014-06-02)

Space. Materiality. Aesthetics. Narrative. Representation. Futures.
Each word taken separately bears the potential for a lifetime of inquiry. Kate Pahl holds them together in the universe of literacy practices in Rotherham, a community in the United Kingdom where she has located her inquiry for the last several years. As an ethnographer, Pahl embodies a research praxis that that hums in the key of empathy and she crafts evocative narratives that animate often hidden or overlooked nuances of meaning making involved in everyday interactions as young people interact with their material worlds. She expands New Literacy Studies research by putting forth a rich taxonomy of literacies embedded within everyday objects, actions, practices, and texts that have community relationships at the center.

Pahl invites us to cultivate a responsive orientation toward communities in which literacies are thriving in unexpected and sometimes unlikely places. This is a book for readers and writers, for researchers and practitioners, and for those who bear a commitment to research as being generative of new knowledge, broadened ways of knowing, and increased access to knowledge-making processes. (Lalitha Vasudevan, Associate Professor of Technology and Education, Teachers College, Columbia University, USA 2014-08-12)

Pahl is a truly committed ethnographer in the finest tradition. To a deep engagement with community she brings an impressive grasp of theory and a storyteller's skill at conveying lives. Read this book to understand how literacy, in its most inclusive sense, is put to work in communities and to learn, through example, what it means to be an engaged literacy scholar. (Susan Nichols, Senior Lecturer, School of Education, University of South Australia, Australia 2014-10-14)

Loved it!
By Jazett Fortner
I went in knowing this a Mpreg book but I didn't know was that it set in the future, where vampires now rule the world. Now Spencer being born deaf he should have been killed at birth but was not. So many times in this book I would forget that Spencer was deaf he is an amazing person, and all he wants is a family of his own. He gets that and more with the Vampire King Prosper. Prosper never thought he would have anyone in life let alone love him for who he is with his scares and all. I still can't get over how Spencer walked into Prosper life and change everything even his twin brother, Parry who I fell in love with. This is a must read if you like Mpreg.

like the first time the MC has time to have ...
By BJ. Carter
I stopped reading the book about 2/3 of the way through. The story skipped around a lot and I found myself backing up to reread things just to make sure I hadn't missed something....and I hadn't...it was just something that you would think was supposed to be significant, like the first time the MC has time to have a real conversation with his real parents, but it was barely mentioned in an offhand manner between sex scenes. I've rarely ever put a book down before finishing, but I found myself losing interest more and more as the story progressed until I decided that it wasn't worth finishing.

Devoured it!
By Anne B.
I love this book, it hooked me right from the very first pages. The story is intriguing and catching, you can't get enough of it and its amazing characters. Adorable Spencer, he will crawl under your Skin and right to your heart. First you think he will be get the worst fate ever, but meeting the Vampire King Prosper, phew, you can almost see the sparks fly. But will Spencer be strong enough to show and convince Prosper of his true feelings and love for him? And will Prosper find his inner strength to give in to sweet Spencer?
The whole story is amazing and just has it all. The MPreg part is great and logic, nothing too strange or awefully explained, I liked that really much. I will reread it some time soon, for sure!!

The Drug Trial: Nancy Olivieri and the Science Scandal that Rocked the Hospital for Sick Children, by Miriam Shuchman

Winner of the Writers' Trust of Canada's Shaughnessy Cohen Prize for Political Writing and the Canadian Science Writers' Association's Science in Society Book Award.

Poison-pen letters, possible medical misconduct and a swirl of competing accusations that led to two inquiries – the Olivieri affair ended careers and shook the international research establishment. A riveting anatomy of Canada’s most controversial drug trial, by the medical journalist who helped break the story.

In August 1998, a medical scandal erupted in the national and international media whose consequences still reverberate. A charismatic young doctor named Nancy Olivieri, working with young people who suffered from a rare blood disorder, stated that she had discovered serious problems with an experimental drug manufactured by Canada’s largest drug company, Apotex. Though her research contract required her to remain silent, she decided she had no choice but to warn the patients enrolled in her trials. Apotex retaliated by cancelling her research and slamming her reputation. In the aftermath, Olivieri became a whistleblower applauded in academia and the media for standing up to powerful corporate interests.

The Olivieri affair spawned two inquiries and multiple lawsuits, but the full story of Canada’s biggest science scandal has never been told – until now. In the hands of psychiatrist and medical journalist Miriam Shuchman, the debacle over the pill called L1 is revealed as a modern morality play in which every crack in the system of scientific research, corporate financing and peer review stands out in stark relief.

By talking with the people whom both Olivieri and Apotex wanted to heal – the young men and women struggling to have normal lives despite debilitating treatment – Shuchman also brings us the moving story of the toll on patients’ health when battles break out among the physicians and researchers aiming to heal them.

Review
“The book is a great cautionary tale about the complexity, benefits and dangers of academy-industry partnerships.” –The Globe and Mail

“It is a story of colossal egos and rushes to judgment, of rivalries and revenge, and of character assassination and serious harm to patients, to doctors and to Canada’s largest drug company.”
–The New York Times

“[Shuchman] writes in clear, expository prose with a judicious calm. . . . The general reader will find it a fascinating and accessible window into the intense emotion, and fierce, often irrational rivalries that can engulf even the most normally dispassionate researchers.”
–Winnipeg Free Press

Prologue

In August 1998, a story about a doctor named Nancy Olivieri grabbed headlines in Toronto. The articles stated that Olivieri had discovered serious problems with an experimental drug manufactured by Canada’s largest pharmaceutical company, a Toronto-based generics manufacturer called Apotex. The drug at the centre of the scandal is a white tablet called L1, or deferiprone, intended for use by patients with the inherited blood disorder thalassemia. Olivieri planned to tell patients about the problems, as required by her hospital. But Apotex played dirty pool, ejecting her from their research program, cancelling the study she was running to test the drug and threatening her with court action if she went public. The scandal was in the news for months. And for four years, legal charges and personal accusations flew back and forth between Olivieri, the company and Toronto’s Hospital for Sick Children, where Olivieri worked.

Parts of this story are well known. The CEO of the drug company Apotex is a billionaire alumnus of the University of Toronto, where Olivieri is a professor. At the same time that Apotex was funding Olivieri to test its drug on patients in a clinical trial, he was offering to put scores of millions toward university research facilities and teaching hospitals such as the Hospital for Sick Children, where Olivieri ran the treatment program for patients with thalassemia. The hospital and the university didn’t step in to defend Olivieri against the company’s threats when they arose. Determined to tell her patients and scientific colleagues about her discoveries, she became a whistleblower, publicly accusing Apotex of suppressing her discoveries. She also blamed her home institutions for allowing it to happen because they didn’t take up her cause. News of her plight shocked academics, and they sprang to her support. She has won medal after medal for courage.

In 1998, her hospital sponsored its inquiry to figure out what had happened; two years later, Canada’s national organization of university faculty associations conducted its own. But the inquirers lacked the power of the coroner or the courts: they couldn’t compel disclosure, ensure confidentiality or allow for appeals. John le Carr spoke to Olivieri and spun a fictional account of the events. Casting her as Lara from Leningrad, he wove her into The Constant Gardener, his recent novel about the human costs of Big Pharma’s corporate greed. Yet the full story of the science scandal that rocked Canada is not as convenient as fiction, and it turns out to be far more shadowy than le Carr imagined.

This is a complex story about medical research and the rules that govern it. Those rules are science’s moral code, the standards scientists live by and train under. Here are a few examples: "Don’t lie about your work." "Don’t steal someone else’s work and claim it’s your own." "Report your findings; don’t bury them." The rules should be easy to follow, but in the fiercely competitive world of modern medical science, they’re not.

In studies of new drugs, the research involves patients, so there are additional strictures: "Don’t ask patients to volunteer for an experiment that’s likely to harm them." "Report the serious side effects of an experimental drug." "Allow patients to drop out of an experiment at any time." The rules for research on humans are discussed in numerous places — the Belmont Report, the Declaration of Helsinki, the Nuremberg Code, National Institutes of Health (NIH) regulations, Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulations, Canada’s Tri-Council guidelines. They’re supposed to be enforced locally by hospitals and universities, and if violations are widespread, federal authorities at the FDA, the NIH or Health Canada can get involved, even to the point of shutting down research at a university.

Yet the rules for doing science aren’t well understood, and newer rules about how to conduct research in an era of public-private partnership are still being hammered out, largely as a result of fiascos such as the one I am about to explore. The debacle of Nancy Olivieri and the pill to save thalassemia patients revealed every crack in the system. It is emblematic of what happens when the standards for scientists’ behaviour and the lines of institutional accountability are unclear.

The saga also unfolded against the background of an ongoing debate over drug research. Those who want greater protection from risky drugs point to innocent victims killed by dangerous prescriptions and lay those deaths at the feet of profiteering drug companies or unwitting drug agencies that approved products too quickly. On the other side, people with rare diseases for which few treatments are available demand the right to decide for themselves how much risk to bear, and urge drug agencies to speed the approval of products in the pipeline.

But at its core, this is a story of scientific rivalry and revenge. "Good scientists will tell you that being a good scientist requires a very competitive spirit in this day and age," said a sociologist of science, Harriet Zuckerman, in the mid-1980s, around the time that L1 was discovered. "It isn’t really clear what the causal relationship is. Maybe you have to be competitive in order to succeed, but maybe succeeding also helps you be competitive."

In the story of Nancy Olivieri and L1, highly successful scientists fought intensely for predominance over a tiny territory — the field of drug treatment for thalassemia. A pharmaceutical company got into the mix and the result was the scientific version of a Greek epic, with researchers battling over ideals, such as the well-being of patients and the integrity of their work, while simultaneously
competing against one another for power and position. At first, Olivieri was the epic’s heroine, telling the secrets of how her science had been thwarted by her enemies. The ferocity of the drug company’s retaliation caught and held our attention. The truth, however, remained obscured until much later, when others emerged to tell the rest of the tale, speaking mostly in whispers to one another. To disentangle a whistleblower’s moment from the legend that’s grown up around her, we’ll need to bring some of those other conversations into the open. Then we may begin to understand what happened here.

The Forgotten Victims
By A. Battaglia
The David vs Goliath story that came out of the saga of the trials of the iron chelating drug, deferiprone, may have made for good reading and good newspaper sales, but just being the smaller guy, or girl in this case, does not make you anymore right than Goliath. The stubbornness exhibited by Dr. Oliveri in this case may have endeared her to the press and public, but it unfortunately may also have cost many thalassemia patients their lives. This book exposes the inner goings-on that tarnish the aura of Dr Oliveri and her David-like stand against the drug company, Apotex.

Deferiprone was a new iron chelator developed by Apotex, to remove the deadly excess iron that accumulates in the blood of thalassemia patients who must receive regular blood transfusions to stay alive, as their own bone marrow cannot create a sufficient supply of functional red blood cells. If not removed, this iron will eventually destroy the organs and kill the patients. Until deferiprone was developed, there was only one other medicine that could be used to remove iron and it involved painful nightly subcutaneous injections that went on for 10 or more hours each night. Because of the pain of the long injections and side effects of the drug, many patients do not comply fully with the treatment, leading to iron overload and eventual death. Deferiprone is an orally administered drug and showed the promise of much better chelation compliance.

Dr Oliveri was commissioned by Apotex to run trials on deferiprone to determine both its effectiveness and any possible side effects. After her early trials, Oliveri became concerned that deferiprone was not safe and began the fight that would lead to it never being approved in Canada and the US, even as it has been approved throughout most of the rest of the world.

Shuchman's book gives in great detail, the inner workings of this process and no one comes out smelling like roses. Neither side behaved in the most ethical of manners but while Apotex was roasted in the press, Oliveri was treated like a champion of the little guy. What we find in Shuchman's book is that this is not so much the story of a champion as it is the tale of stubbornness. In spite of what appeared to be serious flaws in her research, Oliveri has refused to revisit her research and has instead, stood in the way of the approval of the drug. With her stature enhanced by her fight against the drug Goliath, Oliveri has wielded much influence.

The main winner in this case was the competing drug company, who coincidentally, recently released their own oral chelator, which reached the market in swift fashion once the patent on their subcutaneous chelator expired. The losers then and now, are the patients who have been deprived of this medicine because of a dispute that would never have happened if a doctor would have been willing to revisit her trials and admit to the inherent flaws in her research. Study after study was done elsewhere and never were her findings repeated. Some researchers write off Oliveri's research into deferiprone as having a too small group of participants, many of whom already had liver damage from iron overload. The result has been that deferiprone has been approved and is used in many countries. Studies have shown that deferiprone is a superior chelator in terms of removing iron deposits from the heart and since heart failure is the number one cause of death among thalassemics, this is quite significant. When I attended the International thalassemia conference in Dubai in January of 2006, I was somewhat amazed at the matter of fact acceptance that deferiprone has gained among doctors and researchers throughout most of the world. here in North America, people are still under the impression that the drug is not safe, while in most other places it is a key part of the arsenal of drugs being used to treat thalassemia.

For years Oliveri has been treated as a hero in her fight against Apotex and portrayed as the victim. She is not. The real victims are the patients who have been deprived of this drug and have died as a result, my best friend among them. Dr. Shuchman has done a great service reminding us that the little guy is not always in the right. Each case should be judged on its own merits and the media should have the responsibility to fully investigate the truth just as Shuchman has done here.

A Well Researched Book That Undercuts the Traditional "Drug Companies Behaving Badly" Story
By A.T.
When Miriam Shuchman first broke the story on CBC and started researching her book, she found that the usual story of "drug companies misbehave" didn't quite explain all of the facts. She *does* document plenty of that, though -- but in this book, pretty much *everyone* misbehaves.

Dr. Shuchman deserves a lot of kudos for coming forward with this book. Many of the quotes are anonymously attributed (but were fact-checked by the publisher), an unsettling indication of the chilling atmosphere surrounding the whole affair. Where egos are concerned, no one is safe from legal action and other retaliatory measures.

This book's contribution to the literature on conflicts of interest is to show that conflicts of interest can be more than simply financial. Publicly funded academic researchers can be motivated by personal rivalries and the drive to achieve academic success just as much as commercially driven drug company researchers can be motivated by money. I hope this book obtains a wide reading.
