JESSICA GUREVITCH is Professor in the Department of Ecology and Evolution at the State University of New York at Stony Brook, USA. She earned a B.S. in Biological Sciences (Ecology, Evolution, and Systematics) at Cornell University, and a Ph.D. in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at the University of Arizona. SAMUEL M. SCHEINER is currently working for the U.S. federal government. Previously he was on the faculties of Arizona State University, Northern Illinois University and the University of Arizona. He earned his B.A., M.S., and Ph.D., all in Biology, from the University of Chicago.

Good for Ecologist

This book is a good choice for anyone who is a beginning to an experienced Ecologist. With the content in this book you are able to retouch on some of the most common principles of plant ecology, while also reviewing the finer points in more advanced areas. This book is also serving as a great desk reference in my workplace. It would be beneficial for Ecologist, Environmentalist, or Natural Resources Specialist.

Interesting read

I had to purchase this book for my Plant Ecology course. I found that the book was an interesting read (if you like the subject matter). My course followed the main topic from the chapters, but not directly. The book was a great supplement to the class and by reading it I really understood the concepts. We went more indepth in some topics in class and I wish that the book covered it, because it would have been best to read about it too. I think the authors did a great job writing it so that it was interesting.

Outwit the competition?

THE subtitle of the book is “A master class in out-thinking the competition”. Dave Trott does not live up to this promise.

I would go as far as saying that most of us would like to have competition like his, if this is all it takes to outwit them.

I do not write about disappointing books. I prefer not to bring them to anyone’s attention, and let them gather dust in a warehouse. Despite the misleading subtitle, this is an engaging book with lots of wit and wisdom written in a unusually accessible style.

Dave Trott is an advertising agency executive, who was inducted into the Creative Circle Advertising Hall of Heroes in 2009.

The thoughts in each of the book's 10 parts are arranged around a memorable story that enriches learning and embeds the idea in the memory. While the book is aimed at readers in the advertising industry, the messages have a much wider relevance.

Below are three examples.

In the part titled: “Creative is an adjective, not a noun” the concept is revealed through the story of an old lady’s conflict with British Gas. She resisted having British Gas change the pipes below her house as part of the national conversion to North Sea gas. She wanted her house left alone.

Neighbours described her as an “old dear”. She had lived in the house ever since she got married. Her husband was an abusive drunk who beat her each night for years. (In those days, wives did not report these matters to the police.)

One night, after the usual drinking and beating, he left and never returned.

It was a mixed blessing - the beatings stopped, but there was shame attached to being abandoned by one's husband. Neighbours understood this and were kind to her.

British Gas was unmoved and dug up the pipes in her home lifting the carpets, the lino and then the floorboards. The old lady watched and wept.

The British Gas team found a pit with a human skeleton in it. The skull had been crushed.

The old lady confessed - she couldn’t take the beatings anymore. Over a period of months, she had dug the pit and disposed of the sand. When it was large enough, and he came home drunk, she hit him with a cast-iron frying pan until he was dead. Then she dragged the body to the pit under the floorboards, covered it, and told everyone he had walked out on her.

That was an extraordinarily creative (if drastic) solution.

However, like all creativity it doesn’t come in a flash. Most creative acts require analysis of the primary problem (he beat her) and the secondary problem (she couldn’t leave). Solution? He had to disappear.

Creative solutions require hard work, often over months. The frail, frightened lady did it with the effort required to make the creative solution happen - day after day, for months.

Failure to do the hard work leaves a good idea just an idea.

Trott attended a discussion between Stephen Hawking, James Dyson, Robert Winston and Richard Dawkins, hosted by the Science Museum. The four range from the “merely brilliant to genius”.

They talked to each other about their work, bubbling with fun and eagerness. It seemed as if they could not wait to share what they had found out about the world.

What struck Trott as he watch and listened to them was that these were not merely four brilliant people, but four creative people. What makes them creative is their enquiring minds.

Edward de Bono says: “There are many people calling themselves creative who are mere stylists.” What separates the “creative” from the “stylist” is an enquiring mind. “Why does it have to be that way? Why?”

After divorcing his first wife, Trott met Cathy who was to become his second wife. She is Chinese, and hails from Singapore. The couple went to Singapore so Trott could meet his new wife’s family.

Her father had two wives and eight children, and she was a child of the second wife. They lived together in one house and went to the same school.

At school, Cathy was often asked what number wife her mother was. The question was not unusual in Singapore, and one she realised was unusual only when she came to London to study art.

After the meeting, Cathy asked Trott how he had found her father, since he spoke little English. Trott admitted that he felt odd being in the company of a man with two wives. Cathy said: "That’s funny, because he’s not sure he’s comfortable with the idea of his daughter marrying a man who just divorces his wives when he’s fed up with them."

The Western system makes perfect sense. If the relationship cannot work, you both get on with your separate lives.

To the Chinese, if a man takes on responsibility for a woman and children, he does so for life. Cathy’s father thought Trott took marriage trivially, changing wives as he did cars. When you get bored, you trade in the old one for a new model.

He realised that Cathy’s father and he actually agreed: both wanted to treat their wives with respect. But they had remarkably different ways of doing it.

Trott’s way was to treat her as an equal, with all the same opportunities, but also the same problems and responsibilities. The way of Cathy’s father was to shoulder all those problems and responsibilities himself.

Too often we think there is only one right way of seeing things, our way. What follows is that for me to be right, I must prove you are wrong. Little is learned this way.

As the philosopher Bertrand Russell said: "The problem with the world is that the ignorant are arrogant and cocksure while the intelligent are full of doubt."

There is much to think about in this easily read book. Simply ignore the misleading title.

Deceptive title for a mediocre book

This book would make a mildly interesting blog, or maybe even a light-hearted coffee table book for a generic ad agency. But to give it such an evocative title is practically fraud. The only thing predatory about this book is the clickbait title and the misleading description.

Much more than just an advertising book.

There's nothing worse than a very droll book about advertising/marketing. Lord knows there are plenty of them.

But at the end of the day, advertising people are charged with making magic out of the mundane and making something for a broader audience than themselves (sometimes this actually happens). Fortunately, Mr. Trott realizes this and has transcended the usual "we did this and by God, it was awesome!" retelling of tales from the ad trenches and written something that most anyone-regardless of vocation or lifestage-can take something away from.

Inspired by *Days in the Lives of Social Workers* by Linda May Grobman, this book is intended to provide inspiration to individuals interested in creative advocacy and activism, to create a broader sense of community between current practitioners of creative advocacy and activism, and foster greater recognition in the wider professional world of creative advocacy and activism practice. Artists include diverse disciplines including game writing and LARP design, nonfiction writing and memoir, drama, photography, visual art, documentary and film, music performance and writing, and more! This book project is, in and of itself, a ‘meta’ example of ‘advocating creatively,’ since the book’s purpose involves advocating to advance knowledge of ‘advocating creatively’ as a concept.

Historical Novel of Colonial Quebec

The Golden Dog is a historical novel of Quebec during the reign of Louis XV. The main character is Angelique de Meloises, who is as unscrupulous as she is ambitious. She's so ruthless she enlists the aid of the local witch, and that doesn't end well for anyone.

Equally important in the novel is Col. Pierre Philibert, an honorable man who is attempting to stop a cadre of dissolute French (the Grande Compagnie) from taking advantage of the colonists of New France. The compagnie plots against Philibert to further enrich themselves with the material goods of the colony.

Apart from a disparaging reference to George Washington, I enjoyed this historical foray. Since those who opposed the American Revolution fled to Canada, this sentiment is not surprising.

Le Chien d'Or

Le Chien d'Or continued on in legend in Quebec City, and in the 1940's there was a tavern by that name. I read the full edition of Kirby's story in the one pictured here, part of the New Canadian Library series published by McClelland and Stewart (starting in the 1960's). My memory is that the bourgeois Philibert was a Huguenot, and that the populace preferred to trade at his trading house because it was far more fair than dealing with Intendant Bigot and his corrupt cronies. It is good to remember that Kirby is a 19th C Anglophone writing about mid-18th C Quebec - interesting perspective.

Insightful and Thorough

I loved and lived this book! I will not go into a detailed overview as others have already covered that territory, but instead will point out two admirable assets of this work. The first is that the author penetrated General McClellan's mind and personality and, I felt, solved the mystery of his baffling Civil War performance. His classmates at West Point fully expected that McClellan was bound for military glory, yet he failed to achieve his predicted destiny. Throughout the book Burton revisits this question and offers many insights into McClellan's state of mind. I felt that he came closest in the comment that McClellan harbored a mortal dread of failure. This is true of gifted people, especially those like George McClellan whose intellectual gifts are recognized and celebrated early in life. Obviously, it is not as simple as that and many other factors are addressed, but this represents one of many intriguing points made by the author. Another unique perspective of this book is the author's divergence from the usual blame assigned to Confederate generals who commanded during the Seven Days, most notably Stonewall Jackson. Instead of easy accusations, Burton analyzes everyone's performance in depth, including Lee who is not exempt from his microscope. The result is a balanced and seemingly reliable view which convincingly exonerates Jackson for his apparent inaction of the first few days until Glendale when his failure to contribute clearly undermined the Confederate cause. Once again, Burton's grasp of the generals' personalities in their complexity lifts this book to a higher level of understanding. I appreciated the detail and intricate descriptions of troop involvement down to the regimental, and sometimes even company, level. The book does not gloss over the moment-by-moment unfolding of battles or the viewpoint of the common soldier. It's all here, in addition to the author's theory of how the Seven Days represented a kind of microcosm of the whole war to come, as well as what could have been had the battles concluded differently. If you love to delve into the meat of Civil War history, you must read this book!

The Seven Days analyzed, but not humanized.

I approached this book with the high expectations of a readable and thorough account of the Seven Day's battles, and mostly I think that Mr. Burton has succeeded. However, I found that it really wasn't quite as readable as I had hoped. I tended to get bogged down in the details of the book, especially in the battle scenes, which I really had high hopes for. Instead of the "you are there" realism that authors such as Gordon Rhea provide, I instead was struck by the way that the writing almost obscured the action.
Burton tends to fill his tactical descriptions with somewhat too much information, such as the location, movements and name of every single regiment on the field. Now while this is of course necessary for a good understanding of a battle, in this case it tends to overwhelm the actual fighting, leaving the sense that it is more a recitation of troop movements instead of the exciting details of a fight. The end result, at least for me, was confusion, coupled with the desire for a more intimate explanation of the battle. There just isn't a good balance between action and analysis. After having visited the battlefield, I longed to read of the breakthrough at Gaines Mill in a personal, action-oriented manner. Instead, I came away with a pretty good idea of who was where, but no sense of just what they had accomplished. The emotion is simply not there, just the facts. Perhaps emotion just tends to obscure the truths of a battle, but I like the sense of "being there", and of knowing what the soldiers were experiencing first hand. While Burton does make use of period accounts, they just aren't as effective as they could be.
To me, the whole book seemed to be geared more towards strategy and troop movements, with a minimal emphasis on the actual fighting. In this respect, it does a fine job, and is actually an entertaining read in that respect. I was just left somewhat unfulfilled that the tactical side of the book wasn't as good.
As the previous reviewer mentioned, this book is not for the beginner. A moderate knowledge of the war seems to be assumed, and provided you are a Civil War buff, this should not be a problem.
Overall, it is a pretty good book. I don't know that I would call it the definitive account of the Seven Days though. Maybe so, if you are mostly interested in the strategic side, but the battle descriptions just lack the "spark" that makes you a part of the action. If you like the writing of such authors as Gordon Rhea and John Hennessy, you might come away feeling a little unsatisfied, as I did. I would recommend this book as a good analysis of the strategy and command decisions of the campaign, but perhaps Sears' "To the Gates of Richmond" is better at the human aspects of the action.

Excellent New Addition to Peninsula Campaign Literature

I liked this book a lot. Finally the Seven Days' fans out there can sit down and read a very good book dedicated solely to these battles. The only thing better would be an "Ed Bearss Vicksburg Campaign" type treatment with 3,000 pages and 3 or so volumes. I know, it's a long shot, but I can dream can't I? For now, though, at least we have this book, and it's more than just a good start. The maps are extremely good and there are plenty of them! Aside from Clifford Dowdey's book, this is the only one that concentrates specifically on the Seven Days. Burton does go down to the regimental level in many cases. Since this is my favorite campaign in the whole ACW, I was extremely happy when this one came out. 534 pp., 21 maps
