Very straightforward

This book is an excellent introduction to the practical aspects of landscape design. After every chapter, the student can find an extensive bibliography for further study or reference. All concepts are clearly explained, especially spatial perception and projects. If you are looking for a one-in-all book, this is it. However, do not expect it to say much about the history of landscape design. This is a practical book only, but first quality!!!

The authors peers and superiors may find this text exemplary, but the average undergraduate student looking for an introductory textbook will find it written in an alien language. There are so many $100.00 words included in complex, compound sentences which run 22 lines in the book that it seems to take an hour to translate each page.

I am sure the author is a very intelligent man, but he is very ignorant when it comes to communicating with the intended audience. Does he conduct classes in the same way? Have pity on your students. Learn to communicate.

I bought this book three days ago and used all my time reading it. I feel the writer has used very good effort to show the important issues for landscape design. I believe that a student can get easy and good understanding of the different topics of landscape architecture. Yet, I believe the author has several reputation that he could avoid and cover some issues with better information such as art, rules, and social life.

Pros and Cons as always

Pros: The new text is better organized and has clear instructions on how to use the tech, including calculator step by steps AND screenshots!

Cons: I guess I deserved this for being cheap and buying used but, my copy has a big black matte sticker covering the ENTIRE back cover, as well as the author's names... Fishy much? I guess watch your seller. Also, it smells a bit funny; not sure if that's to do with the seller so much as just the book itself (you know how sometimes inks or papers, depending on quality, can smell... fishy? Yeah.)

Bottom line: it is a well organized book, and much clearer than the older editions, which I abhorred.

Very disappointed and feel like we were ripped off

This book did not come with the Data CD or Formula Card. We had to pay an additional $40 for an online code, because our college student needed the code immediately. No time to return the book and wait for a new one. Very disappointed and feel like we were ripped off. Not happy.

This book is OK.

This book is alright but for me it does not explain some of the problems very well. This was bought for a college class and I am having to go to other sources sometimes to see how some problems are done. I wish some of the examples were a little clearer.

Better than Noma

Quay is simply stunning. The quality of the photography, layout, materials is just first class and much better than NOMA. Though Redzepi and Gilmore share a similar local terroir cooking philosophy the book presents Gilmore's cuisine much better. As far as recipes, keep in mind that Quay the restaurant is in Sydney so a lot of the ingredients used may not even be available here, though to Gilmore's credit he doesn't seem to dumb down any of the recipes, his presentations are just stunning, very much akin to Michel Bras (which he acknowledges, as well as Redzepi and Aduriz) every dish is heavy with local herbs/flowers/sprouts, etc. This is a book geared really towards professionals in the industry that can certainly use the recipes but more so for the inspiration Gilmore gives in flavor, textures and presentations. A definite must have for the hardcore book collector, professional chef/foodie and well worth the modest price.

As my cookbook collection nears triple digits it really takes something special in order to stand out from the crowd. Seated alongside books like Noma, Alinea, the Thomas Keller collection and even the vast expanse that is the Modernist Cuisine set Quay stands out as the most impressive by far! The quality of materials and printing is simply astonishing. Now if your looking for a cookbook to copy and paste recipes to impress your mother in law this isnt the book for you. Its meant for professionals and the truly hardcore home cooks, to inspire and enlighten rather than give you something to cook on Saturday night (although you could i imagine). As a professorial Chef I look to books like this for inspiration for the upcoming season and Quay is hugely influential in this respect, I may never cook a dish directly from the book but techniques and ideas are conveyed just as much as weights and measurements. I love this book, I read it cover to cover upon first receiving it. it draws you in and grabs hold of you, its all youll be talking about for days after getting it.

Pros:
*highest production values of any cookbook i have seen thus far! Beautiful paper!
*8 texture chocolate cake!
*Introductions to dishes explaining inspirations are well written.
*Amazing photography.
*Cloth-like cover and binding are actually quite durable.

Cons:
*high gloss paper will show fingerprints.
*Not for everyone.
*Many ingredients will be impossible (or nearly so) to source outside of Australia.
*Focus on using fresh edible flowers and buds seems overdone on some dishes (to my taste)

One of the most stunning cookbooks

As I've gradually built my cookbook collection, few have been as prized an acquisition as the Quay cookbook. This book is incredibly breathtaking. The book itself and the photography within are fantastic. I have yet to find another cookbook on par with the attention to detail. The Alinea, Fat Duck, and Noma books all come short. The presentation of dishes in elaborate. Clearly an immense amount of thought and care went into designing this book.

The recipes are complex, though a number are very approachable. Gilmore has also filled the book with organic photographs that are stunning. With a textured cover and multiple different paper types inside, this is THE coffee table cookbook. I have yet to find another book that is as naturally beautiful as this. A must for chefs and strongly recommended for any who love beautiful cookbooks.

About the Author
Archana Prasad is Associate Professor at the Centre for Jawaharlal Nehru Studies, Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi, and was earlier a fellow of the Nehru Memorial Museum and Library. She has written extensively on tribal development, identity formation and local systems of natural resource conservation for scholarly as well as popular journals. Her books include 'Environmentalism and the Left: Contemporary Debates and Future Agenda in Tribal Areas' (2004); 'Tribal Livelihoods and Globalisation: Exploring the Potential of Non-Timber Forest Produce in Eastern and Central India' (2005), and an edited volume on 'Environment, Development and Society in Contemporary India: An Introduction' (2009).

Great for special education!

My husband is a special education teacher. He bought this to present to his students. It does a great job at giving special education students access to the content that other students will get from longer stories about the life of Martin Luther King, Jr. It is very easily readable, and it has great illustrations to depict the way Martin Luther King's life was during the time of the civil rights movements. His students really enjoyed the text and illustrations, and the book also provided them with a very convenient timeline of the important dates of the life of Martin Luther King, Jr. My husband and I will be added this book to our daughters' book collection for when they are older.

My daughter loves this book

My five-year-old daughter was fascinated with this book even though it didn't include fairies, animals, or dinosaurs. I was very happy with the information they presented which gives some basic information about Dr. King while not treating his death in such a way that might overly upset sensitive children like mine. The illustrations are wonderfully done and my daughter looked them over carefully for a long time. It is a wonderful opportunity to launch more discussions about racism and the way we treat other people because of their gender, race, or religion.

Excellent first biography

The entire "A picture book of..." biography series byDavid Adler is outstanding. Perfect for lower elementary studentsdoing their first real report. Makes a great read-aloud for non-readers as they are easily completed in one sitting. They are loaded with information including a timeline of important dates. The illustrations in this book are not cartoon-like as in his other biographies of Washington or Lincoln, but are appealing to young children.

Abacus Mind Math Level 1 - Workboook 1 of 2 (for students):

Abacus Mind Math is the best resource I have found

I searched the internet high and low for a practical book that would help me teach the Soroban-the search is over! Abacus Mind Math is the best resource I have found, and we use it everyday! Not only is it great on its own, but I had some questions and I called the author (She put her contact info in the book). She is extremely nice and spoke with me until I had all my questions answered. She is currently writing the next book in the series.
Regarding content: It is sequential, easy to use, and comes with lots of practice problems.
Regarding my method (incase you're new to soroban or are looking for other ideas): We homeschool 2 girls (5 &3). I have my oldest do about 40-50min of practice 4 times a week. I DON'T have her practice 40-50 min straight. I break it up into 3-4 segments throughout the day. The segments are listed below:
Segment 1: I have her do 10 problems on her own sitting at the table, good posture, and using proper technique. She reads the problem out of the workbook, keeps her finger on the number she is on, and with her other hand she is moving the beads accordingly. Then she writes the answer in the book. After 10 problems, she is off to play!
Segment 2: After a good break for play 20-30 min or so, I start segment 2. This time I hold the book and she is just sitting with her soroban at the table. I read the same problems to her that she had just done (I check her work at this time, too; I also modify the speed I say the numbers-just to keep her on her toes...or fingers in this case!). And she is off to play!
Segment 3: Mental math time! Again, I have the book and now she is sitting at the table with no soroban in front of her. I ask her the same problems, only this time she has to do them in her head. We weren't having much progress at first but the author told me to make sure she is pretending like the soroban is right in front of her and that she is pretending to move the beads with her fingers; not boisterously-like in the youtube videos, but just like they normally would if the soroban was right in front of them. It's still a struggle, but she has improved and is definitely getting better.
Here are a couple bonus segments that I do:
1) I play a game called BIG friends. I say a number, like 4 and she will say 6 (b/c when you put them together they equal 10)
2) I play a game called SMALL friends. I say a number, like 4 and she will say 1 (b/c when you put them together they equal 5)
This skill will be important down the road when we encounter carry problems.
3) Just have them count.
4) Review the place values (each rod corresponds to a place value: ones, tens, thousands, etc) I will also write a number and ask her what place value is each number in.
5) I will roll some dice and just keep adding or start form a real high number and then we will start subtracting.

My personal thoughts:
I bought Saxton math and their big box of manipulatives and have not touched them. I will eventually use Saxon; however, I have no idea when that will be, because the goal is arithmetic proficiency, and the soroban can handle it all. I have many friends that use Math U See, and I think that it is a better program at this early stage, but again why use all those different manipulatives when you can use one-the soroban. I picture the soroban like a musical instrument- that they will eventually be able to play in their minds. Remember the name of the book: Abacus MIND MATH. Watch some youtube videos of the Japanese or Indian students demonstrating their speed and accuracy with their mental soroban.

Stay consistent and keep practicing! Just do a little bit everyday and you will see great results!

Great math course.

This series of books are everything the other 5 star reviewers say it is and more.

All of the SAI Speed Math Academy books are well written, nicely illustrated, easy to read, follow and understand. They are all well worth the price paid.

It is very difficult to find a good book for learning how to use the abacus and it is next to impossible to find any information on how to learn Anzan - the secrets of mental speed math.

SAI Speed Math Academy has done a great job of making all this information available in this series of lessons that make learning easy and fun.

This book is a workbook - a weekly series of daily math problems and mental exercises. The instruction books are very important because they cover the "how to do it" part of the course with easy to follow - step by step instructions.

I highly recommend all of these SAI Speed Math Academy books.

Very good workbook to buy with the Instruction book

This workbook is fantastic! It has a lot of sample and practice problems that relate to each lesson as well. My kid had an easy time in completing the assignments every day as assigned. Speaking of which, I used the Instruction book to teach them and I felt that the material progressed really well and easy enough for the kids to understand and learn. If you are looking for an Abacus Math book that is fun and will both reinforce and help the student apply and learn the information, this book is a must.
