Losing Site: Architecture, Memory and Place (Ashgate Studies in Architecture), by Shelley Hornstein

As Ruskin suggests in his Seven Lamps of Architecture: "We may live without [architecture], and worship without her, but we cannot remember without her." We remember best when we experience an event in a place. But what happens when we leave that place, or that place no longer exists? This book addresses the relationship between memory and place and asks how architecture captures and triggers memory. It explores how architecture exists as a material object and how it registers as a place that we come to remember beyond the physical site itself. It questions what architecture is in the broadest sense, assuming that it is not simply buildings. Rather, architecture is considered to be the mapping of physical, mental or emotional space. The idea that we are all architects in some measure - as we actively organize and select pathways and markers within space - is central to this book's premise. Each chapter provides a different example of the manifold ways in which the physical place of architecture is curated by the architecture in our "mental" space: our imaginary toolbox when we think of a place and look at a photograph, or visit a site and describe it later or send a postcard. By connecting architecture with other disciplines such as geography, visual culture, sociology, and urban studies, as well as the fine and performing arts, this book puts forward the idea that a conversation about architecture is not exclusively about formal, isolated buildings, but instead must be deepened and broadened as spatialized visualizations and experiences of place.

Review
'In Losing Site Hornstein takes us on a dizzying pilgrimage from the Guggenheim to Google Earth, from Toronto to Tel Aviv, showing along the way how architecture, place, and memory work together in dynamic interplay. Hornstein's themes are as wide-ranging as the places she explores: nationhood and nationalism, war and demolition, starchitecture and everyday life. The book offers a unique look at how our fast-paced, technology-driven lives have re-shaped travel and tourism.' Annmarie Adams, McGill University, Canada 'Losing Site is an erudite and extremely thoughtful meditation on the nexus of architecture, memory, and place. Shelley Hornstein brings a theoretically-grounded sensibility together with an amazingly astute eye in her discussions of site-specific art and architecture - ranging from Karavan's Benjamin memorial at Portbou, to synagogue ruins at Capernaum, to the contemporary explosion of striking new memorials and museums in Berlin, and beyond.' James E. Young, University of Massachusetts Amherst, USA 'Losing Site: Architecture, Memory and Place is an extended meditation on how architecture sutures, unravels, and transforms the human experience of place and identity... Hornstein's intriguing interdisciplinary odyssey reminds social theorists, visual artists, and architects alike, why we need to pay close attention to both the architecture of imagination and our imagination of architecture.' Historical Justice and Memory Research Network 'Losing Site: Architecture, Memory and Place is an inspiring work of ample intellectual breadth. Hornstein has skilfully interwoven a wide variety of case studies, to suggest that the material and non-material worlds are seamlessly interconnected in everyday life and we often can't easily know where one ends and the other starts. She most aptly reminds us that architecture that shapes and is shaped by us remains open and unfinished.' Emotion, Space and Society 'Hornstein's book evokes landscapes, buildings, memorials and even postcards to argue for memory's primacy among ways of organizing our perceptions... Hornstein certainly deals with topics of wide interest and relevance.' Journal of Urban Technology

Entry-level Coverage of TestNG Java Testing Framework
By Dustin Marx
As its title suggests, TestNG Beginner's Guide is a book aimed to introducing developers to TestNG, a Java-based unit testing framework inspired by and often seen as a replacement to JUnit. This book uses numerous screen snapshots and code listings to introduce core features of TestNG. The book is aimed at Java developers who are unfamiliar with TestNG. Basic Java and JUnit experience is helpful when reading this book. The Eclipse IDE is assumed throughout the book, but the examples are basic enough that most readers can probably learn the concepts without using Eclipse if they prefer. Because this is a beginner's book, it's not surprising that it doesn't spend much time covering why certain features should be used or covering when to use one TestNG feature instead of another. The book primarily introduces concepts with simple examples, but adds very little as to why to use that feature or when to use that feature. For those experienced with JUnit, this is probably not much of a problem because the principles learned with JUnit can be applied to TestNG once TestNG syntax and features are understood.

Great guide for developers who really need to rapidly deal with TestNG
By andzoff
I rated five stars for the book's quality and effectiveness.
TestNG is a fundamental tool for software developers who want to obtain a good quality for the software through a powerful and versatile test environment.
TestNG Beginner's Guide is a great book. It treats not only the TestNG tool itself, but explains some important basis of the testing phase in the software development cycle.
The topic is well explained, with a clear language and a very good book organization. All the practice activities are explained step by step, with the correct quantity of images, so you don't need to know JUnit to experiment TestNG quickly.
I decided to adopt TestNG for a project I'm working on and through this book I rapidly built a good test suite, and experimented all the advantages of TestNG.

If you're completely new to testing and TestNG in particular it is worth a read.
By M. Eisele
Packt was so kind to send me another book to look at. I've always been curious about testing in general and I was looking for some good stuff to hand to co-workers or otherwise interested people to get started with TestNG.

The Content
Chapter one gives a brief introduction about testing and test automation. How to get started with TestNG, where to get it from and how to integrate it into your favorite IDE. Eclipse is used throughout the book. Chapter two deals with the basic configuration and introduces test suites and the command prompt usage. It also adds a couple of tests for packages, classes and methods. Chapter three is all about annotations. Setup and destroy, disabling tests and how to use parameterization. Test groups are introduced in chapter four followed by adding dependencies in chapter five. Chapter six and seven deal with the factory annotation and parallelism in tests. Chapter eight gives an overview about build tool integration covering Ant and Maven. Logging and reporting about test runs is covered in chapter nine. Programmatic test creation is covered in chapter ten. A basic migration scenario is covered in chapter 11. The closing chapter deals with the differences between unit and functional testing and explains additional concepts like JMock, Mockito and how to use Selenium.

Writing and Style
Generally the instructions are clear and the screen-shots are helpful. The overall level of detail and mixed in complexity is appropriate. Overall an easy read and well structured. Great for beginners and even developers familiar with the topic could still use it as a reference.

Conclusion and recommendation
The book is aimed at introducing developers to TestNG. It uses numerous screenshots and code listings to introduce core features and only requires basic Java and probably JUnit knowledge. The book is aimed at Java developers who are unfamiliar with TestNG. If you're completely new to testing and TestNG in particular it is worth a read. One trade off is the very basic style of the examples. Additionally it does not tell you about why to use that feature or when to use another.

Great Reference book!
By Cayce Hrivnak
Before now, I was not really familiar with C++ or the different patterns used. This book actually lays out different types of design patterns, how to implement them, includes great examples on how to use them, and much more. It is laid out in a way you will understand and will help you with different questions you might have had about the different patterns.

Take a look at it! It may help you out!

Incorrect examples
By Amazon Customer
The first pattern in the book is the Abstract Factory pattern. Instead of giving an example of this, he instead shows an example of abstract inheritance. If someone were to use the author's example in an interview, the job would certainly be lost.

Linear and Nonlinear Multivariable Feedback Control: A Classical Approach, by Oleg Gasparyan

Automatic feedback control systems play crucial roles in many fields, including manufacturing industries, communications, naval and space systems. At its simplest, a control system represents a feedback loop in which the difference between the ideal (input) and actual (output) signals is used to modify the behaviour of the system. Control systems are in our homes, computers, cars and toys. Basic control principles can also be found in areas such as medicine, biology and economics, where feedback mechanisms are ever present.

Linear and Nonlinear Multivariable Feedback Control presents a highly original, unified control theory of both linear and nonlinear multivariable (also known as multi-input multi-output (MIMO)) feedback systems as a straightforward extension of classical control theory. It shows how the classical engineering methods look in the multidimensional case and how practising engineers or researchers can apply them to the analysis and design of linear and nonlinear MIMO systems.

This comprehensive book:

  • uses a fresh approach, bridging the gap between classical and modern, linear and nonlinear multivariable control theories;
  • includes vital nonlinear topics such as limit cycle prediction and forced oscillations analysis on the basis of the describing function method and absolute stability analysis by means of the primary classical frequency-domain criteria (e.g. Popov, circle or parabolic criteria);
  • reinforces the main themes with practical worked examples solved by a special MATLAB-based graphical user interface, as well as with problems, questions and exercises on an accompanying website.

The approaches presented in Linear and Nonlinear Multivariable Feedback Control form an invaluable resource for graduate and undergraduate students studying multivariable feedback control as well as those studying classical or modern control theories. The book also provides a useful reference for researchers, experts and practitioners working in industry

  • uses a fresh approach, bridging the gap between classical and modern, linear and nonlinear multivariable control theories;
  • includes vital nonlinear topics such as limit cycle prediction and forced oscillations analysis on the basis of the describing function method and absolute stability analysis by means of the primary classical frequency-domain criteria (e.g. Popov, circle or parabolic criteria);

Personal History, by Katharine Graham

Winner of the 1998 Pulitzer Prize for Biography

An extraordinarily frank, honest, and generous book by one of America's most famous and admired women, Personal History is, as its title suggests, a book composed of both personal memoir and history.

It is the story of Graham's parents: the multimillionaire father who left private business and government service to buy and restore the down-and-out Washington Post, and the formidable, self-absorbed mother who was more interested in her political and charity work, and her passionate friendships with men like Thomas Mann and Adlai Stevenson, than in her children.

It is the story of how The Washington Post struggled to succeed -- a fascinating and instructive business history as told from the inside (the paper has been run by Graham herself, her father, her husband, and now her son).

It is the story of Phil Graham -- Kay's brilliant, charismatic husband (he clerked for two Supreme Court justices) -- whose plunge into manic-depression, betrayal, and eventual suicide is movingly and charitably recounted.

Best of all, it is the story of Kay Graham herself. She was brought up in a family of great wealth, yet she learned and understood nothing about money. She is half-Jewish, yet -- incredibly -- remained unaware of it for many years. She describes herself as having been naive and awkward, yet intelligent and energetic. She married a man she worshipped, and he fascinated and educated her, and then, in his illness, turned from her and abused her. This destruction of her confidence and happiness is a drama in itself, followed by the even more intense drama of her new life as the head of a great newspaper and a great company, a famous (and even feared) woman in her own right. Hers is a life that came into its own with a vengeance -- a success story on every level.

Graham's book is populated with a cast of fascinating characters, from fifty years of presidents (and their wives), to Steichen, Brancusi, Felix Frankfurter, Warren Buffett (her great advisor and protector), Robert McNamara, George Schultz (her regular tennis partner), and, of course, the great names from the Post: Woodward, Bernstein, and Graham's editorpartner, Ben Bradlee. She writes of them, and of the most dramatic moments of her stewardship of the Post (including the Pentagon Papers, Watergate, and the pressmen's strike), with acuity, humor, and good judgment. Her book is about learning by doing, about growing and growing up, about Washington, and about a woman liberated by both circumstance and her own great strengths.

Amazon.com Review
In lieu of an unrevealing Famous-People-I-Have-Known autobiography, the owner of the Washington Post has chosen to be remarkably candid about the insecurities prompted by remote parents and a difficult marriage to the charismatic, manic-depressive Phil Graham, who ran the newspaper her father acquired. Katharine's account of her years as subservient daughter and wife is so painful that by the time she finally asserts herself at the Post following Phil's suicide in 1963 (more than halfway through the book), readers will want to cheer. After that, Watergate is practically an anticlimax.

From Library Journal
Katharine Meyer Graham was a woman born into a world of wealth and privilege who raised four children, became involved in volunteer work, and ended as the head of a powerful newspaper. Graham's father, a wealthy entrepreneur, bought the struggling Washington Post in 1933. Although Katharine had worked as a journalist, it was her husband, Philip Graham, who was chosen to take over the paper from her father. This is the story of a newspaper's rise to power but also of the destruction of a marriage, as Philip Graham slid into alcohol, depression, and suicide, and of Katharine's rise as a powerful woman in her own right. Throughout this easy-to-read story, Graham writes about her personal life and the lives of others, ranging from presidents to household help, with sympathy and grace. Recommended for public libraries.

From Booklist
Katharine (with an a) Graham has led a very full life, and her personal history will be, most likely, very well received by the public, for through it, she manages to answer questions of enduring interest: How do the excessively rich live? How do the rich get rich? How do they stay that way? How does a young, rich woman become more than a woman with lots of time on her hands? She indirectly answers those questions by shaping her family's history with a view toward its stewardship of the Washington Post. Graham, born to multimillionaire Eugene Meyer, a Jew, and Agnes Ernst, an arrogant German, lived such a sheltered life that in college she had to be told how to wash a sweater. Like most men of her time, she did not know how to maintain her material possessions but was well schooled in mind and body (a professional tennis player lived with the family for a while). Beyond her upbringing, Graham manages a controlled but seemingly full discussion of the many sensational aspects of her life: the suicide of her husband, Phil Graham; her rise to publisher of The Post; the Pentagon Papers; Watergate; and the dreadful pressmen's strike, a dispute in which Graham prevailed. In this well-researched memoir, with a cast of fascinating people doing their cameo turns, including several presidents, the photographer Edward Steichen, Thomas Mann, Felix Frankfurter, Warren Buffet, and Ben Bradlee, Graham keeps the sets moving and makes everyone work for her. It is a well-examined life. Bonnie Smothers

What a wonderful combination of substance and opportunity!
By JC Reader
Since I grew up in a house where the "Washington Post" was devoured daily, I was always aware of Katherine Graham. I read this book shortly after she passed away, and I was knocked off my feet.

She was blessed by the accident of her birth into a family of extreme wealth and ultimate social position. Her family's advantages - sadly compounded by her husband's untimely death - gave her inumerable opportunities. At the same time, she was brilliant, capable, focused, and a gifted communicator. This combination of traits and circumstances allowed her to live a most enthralling, significant life.

Throughout, I marveled at her "realness." Her family had more money and servants and things than anyone I am ever likely to meet, but she describes her challenges, insecurities, and fears in a way that allow me to appreciate how she faced and succeeded in life.

This is a compelling read despite its length and detailed content. It is well documented and beautifully written - without the aid of a ghostwriter. It does not suffer from spurious melodrama, myopia, or vanity to which so many autobiographers fall victim.

I highly recommend both the form and substance of this book.

Uplifting & life affirming
By At Leaterbarrow
Anyone wanting any more insights into Watergate or the Pentagon Papers will probably be disappointed by this book (if you want that read Ben Bradlee's autobiography). This book is very aptly titled - it is indeed a personal history and what comes out in the end is the story of a woman who via her upbringing and marriage was afflicted by a crushing lack of confidence, deeply insecure, troubled by some of her closest relationships (in particular her own mother) and in her own words little more than a housewife. This same person upon the death of her husband was thrust into a world which she was totally unsuited for and against all odds flourished as the first CEO of a Fortune 500 company.
What comes out in the end is that people in general and women in particular are capable of taking grievous blows and overcoming far greater challenges than they ever realise.
A friend of mine lost her partner in similar circumstances to Katharine Graham many years ago and I wish I could have bought her this book then. Without wanting to sound patronising, this is a good book for men but a great book women. I don't know whether she is a feminist icon but she certainly should be !!

I hope I have a story like this I can tell at age 80
By A Customer
I read this book's first chapter on the internet, and knew I had to buy it. I was captivated by the analysis and detail in the early chapters, specifically targeted at her parents, their relationship, and the impact they had on her and her siblings. Details are gradually drawn away from family and, after Phil Graham's death, is focused almost entirely on her career at the Post. But the new focus her life takes is nothing short of inspirational, and her recollection (and application)of detail provides us with an absorbing panorama of faces and places. Having known little about the newspaper industry prior to this book, I am eager to know more, and put Ms. Graham's tremendous accomplishments in a more informed perspective. Despite her insecurities, fears and worries (which were difficult to read--even to believe--at times) they are obviously a part of her personality, and by revealing them she made her story more compelling. I felt that, if her point was to write a manual for success, she could have done so. But how much she would have deprived us of! The only serious deficiency I found was that I thought, with the great deal of commentary at the beginning of the book concerning how she and her siblings were raised--with particular emphasis on her mother's influence--that she would have included more on what the effects of her own role as a mother were. But, this omission seems to have been a conscious one on her part. This was my nightly reading for quite some time, and I feel a little sad that I no longer have it to look forward to! Though I was certainly glad when the interminably long segment on the pressmen's strike was over, as important as the incident was...

Haven in a Heartless World (Norton Paperback), by Christopher Lasch

In the American political vocabulary, "family" and "family values" no longer simply evoke pictures of harmonious scenes; they also push our buttons (left and right) about what is wrong with society.

One of the earliest and sharpest cultural commentators to investigate the twentieth-century American family, Christopher Lasch argues in this book that as social science "experts" intrude more and more into our lives, the family's vital role as the moral and social cornerstone of society disintegrates―and, left unchecked, so does our political and personal freedom.

Mr. Lasch combines an analytic overview of the psychological and sociological literature on the American family with his own trenchant analysis of where the problem lies.

Review
There is no more brilliant exposure of the collective self-deceptions of a 'therapeutic' society in quest of psychic security. . . . [Lasch's] indispensable contribution is the argument that public concern for the plight of the family has commonly masked efforts to subject the family to new forms of outside influence. --David Brion Davis"

A brilliant little book. . . . As an analyst of social science literature on the family, Lasch is superb. On balance, his book is the best essay available today on the modern history of the family. --David Hackett Fischer"

A fascinating, alarming, profound study. . . . [A book] to ponder for years to come. "

About the Author
Christopher Lasch (1932? 1994) was also the author of The True and Only Heaven, The Revolt of the Elites and the Betrayal of Democracy, and other books.

A familys' responsiblity for the shaping of society.
By Robert T. Dubach
When people wonder why people turn in to who they are and form the society in wth which we live this book will help clarify things for them. If one wants a deep look at society's ills and its being formed by families, Christopher Lasch presents a very good insight, that for reasons of accuracy may not make everyone happy.

A Prelude to The Culture of Narcissism
By Richard B. Schwartz
In The Culture of Narcissism, Christopher Lasch mentions the importance of Haven in a Heartless World as a prelude document. Among other things, Lasch attributes the culture of narcissism to an attempt by various social agencies, academics, health professionals and bureaucrats to create space for themselves by proposing ways of solving problems that are ultimately unsolvable. We begin our lives with a sense of loss, the world being a colder and more difficult place than the warmth and freedom from responsibility afforded by the womb. Enter the professional nurturers who will build careers for themselves by promising to remedy that sense of loss through their various ministrations (which, once applied, prove to be more problematic than the ills they have purported to cure).

Haven in a Heartless World looks at the displacement of family responsibility by such individuals. Beginning in the nineteenth century, Lasch works his way forward principally through the study of sociological literature, most of which he finds radically wanting. While I agree with Lasch's critics that he spends less time articulating his own advice and principles than one might wish, his command of the literature at his disposal is very, very impressive. Haven in a Heartless World does not utilize the broad cultural materials of The Culture of Narcissism but it is an important step on the way to Lasch's major book.

While not inaccessible to general readers, Haven in a Heartless World will be of particular interest to sociologists and other social scientists. It remains relevant today, even though it appeared over three decades ago.

Compelling social commentary
By magellan
Compelling social commentary, and brilliantly written, perhaps not surprising since Lasch was not a social scientist, but rather a professor of English Literature, at Columbia if I recall right, but in any case, at one of the Ivy League colleges. Lasch became interested in social trends, and ended up writing this fine book on the decline and destruction of the family in American life. Although the book is 20 years old at this point, Lasch's ideas are if anything more relevant now than they were back in the 70's.

The maps are pretty much useless
By Ajax
Kindle edition is difficult to navigate. The maps are pretty much useless. Lonely Planet isn't what it used to be. They are more focused on upmarket travellers than they used to be, and their preachy political correctness causes them to leave out a lot of information. The printed Jens Petersen book is a little older but far more useful.

For Travellers Who Don't Care About Culture
By Ikat
This guidebook is the product of deeply uncurious minds. It goes on and on and on about beaches, diving, snorkling, with virtually no discussion or detail about architecture, tribal cultures or any of the things many folks travel to see. Sure, it will say there is a tribal market - but provide no information about tribal villages in the region, whether they exist, are worth visiting, etc. This is true even in an island as rich in tribal culture as Mindanao. In the chapters at the end of the book, there are about 2 pages whichever list, and very briefly describe, the tribes.

The same is true where architecture is concerned. Spanish Colonial? Art Deco? Why bother? Also, information on museums is minimal. Yes, it tells you what they have, hours, etc. - but surely there are large museums in Manila that deserve more.

I am about I read the Rough Guide, a series I dislike, to see if they are better. Otherwise, I'll use LP for treansportation and general information and rely on Google, and books, for real information.

I must say that we were disappointed by this particular Lonely Planet Guide

2 friends and I just arrived home from a 2.5 week Philippine Adventure. I must say that we were disappointed by this particular Lonely Planet Guide, as we discovered far more things to do and see, including many hidden gems that only Lonely Planet usually notifies travelers of, on blogs, Trip Advisor, and just plan ol' remembering things from Travel Channel Shows. So disappointed, in fact, that one of my fellow travel buddies is planning on writing Lonely Planet a letter. I didn't look through the Rough Guide or any other tour book, but there's no way that those can be worse than this edition. It just seemed like the authors were uninspired and compiled just enough to call it a book. Also, a lot of the things listed that Lonely Planet rated as mediocre turned out to be fantastic and vice-versa. I wish Rick Steves did more than just Europe!
