Mezmerizing and well done

I have to admit: despite my hesitancy about hearing another author's version of A.C. Doyle's fascinating character of Sherlock Holmes, I purchased this Audiobook because of my (if I may be so circumspect) recent fascination with Benedict Cumberbatch. I have become a fan of his portrayal of Sherlock through BBC's TV program of the same name. When I had a long drive ahead of me, I purchased this audiobook because the richness of Benedict Cumberbatch's voice and my curiosity about the stories. This is an audiobook worth every penny (this is not a blatant bias). The stories are completely engaging, entirely believable, and written so cleverly that I had a difficult time believing it wasn't some long lost manuscript of A.C. Doyle's own creation. Benedict Cumberbatch (maybe a bit of bias here...) gives life and immediacy to the book with his talent for different voices, and accents (bravo especially for the well done American accent). All in all, this is a brilliant and worthy addition to the Sherlock Holmes oeuvre. Of course, my next question is: when can we expect more?

Left me wanting more!

The stories were enjoyable and entertaining. Sherlock Holmes is, by far, my favorite fictional character. I have read/listened/watched nearly every adaptation of the character. I have listened to Basil Rathbone's audio readings, which were good.

I must say Benedit Cumberbatch does an excellent job at the voices of all of the characters within each story. He did a good impression of an American, with only a few word pronunciation slips that are not typical of an American (I know, I'm picky). Still, he did a wonderful job.

I would definitely buy more Sherlock Holmes audio books if Cumberbatch narrates.

BBC Sherlock fans will enjoy this!

My daughters are both big fans of BBC's Sherlock series, and of Benedict Cumberbatch. They LOVE this! I got it as a Christmas present for one, but they both have listened to it repeatedly. The stories are entertaining, and the narration by Mr. Cumberbatch is the icing on the cake (and the initial reason for the purchase)! Arrived quickly and in great shape!

About the Author

Ronald B. Adler is Professor of Communication Emeritus at Santa Barbara City College. He is coauthor of Interplay: The Process of Interpersonal Communication, Eleventh Edition (OUP, 2009), Looking Out, Looking In (2011), and Communicating at Work: Principles and Practices for Business and the Professions (2011).

George Rodman is a professor in the Department of Television and Radio at Brooklyn College, City University of New York, where he founded the graduate media studies program. He is author of Mass Media in a Changing World, Fourth Edition (2011), Making Sense of Media (2001), and several books on public speaking.

Carrie Cropley Hutchinson is a professor in the Department of Communication at Santa Barbara City College, where she directs the Interpersonal Communication and Business Communication programs. She also teaches Intercultural Communication for the college's study abroad program. Professor Cropley is the author of Interpersonal Communication: Navigating Relationships in a Changing World (2010).

Full of Helpful, Real-Life Information!

I like this text because it addresses many of the current and emerging forms of communication as well as the usual stuff one would expect to find in a communication book. This book also has a great appendix that offers specific interview and employment strategies as well as communication tips for career advancement. There's some helpful information pertaining to resume building, and I found the suggestions relating to preparing for interview questions to be especially helpful. Great book for the price.

It's an okay book. This book does provide some of the essential concepts in understanding how communication works, but lacks any real depth.

I'm not 12

The tone of this book is either very condescending or is actually written for 12 year olds. Some of the sentences are constructed in such an obtuse way it is almost painful to read. If I didn't *have* to read this book for class, I definitely would never read it. The way that key terms are in italics instead of in bold/contrasting color/underlined makes it difficult to know what exactly one is supposed to glean from the work. Also, textbooks are extremely expensive and this one contains comic strips which I am sure are not free to use, making it that much frustrating to read. I really don't think that a "Cathy" comic strip is going to teach me anything about communication that isn't possible to just explain in plain text. It's not cute.

About the Author
Elizabeth Wardle is an associate professor and the Director of Writing Programs at the University of Central Florida. Her research interests center on genre theory, transfer of writing-related knowledge, and infusing composition classrooms with the field's best understandings of how writing works. She is currently conducting a study examining the impact of smaller class size on the learning of composition students, as well as a study examining the impact of the writing-about-writing pedagogy on student writing and attitudes about writing. �Doug Downs is an assistant professor of rhetoric and composition in the Department of English at Montana State University. His research interests center on research-writing pedagogy and facilitating undergraduate research both in first-year composition and across the undergraduate curriculum. He continues to work extensively with Elizabeth Wardle on writing-about-writing pedagogies and is currently studying problems of researcher authority in undergraduate research in the humanities.

About the Author

Andrzej Sapkowski was born in 1948 in Poland. He studied economics and business, but the success of his fantasy cycle about the sorcerer Geralt of Rivia turned him into a bestselling writer. He is now one of Poland's most famous and successful authors.

Must read for sword-and-sorcery fans

Andrzej Sapkowski's The Last Wish is a must read for sword-and-sorcery aficionados.
• The Last Wish and most of the series were published in the 1990’s
• They spawned from Poland, not the United States or United Kingdom
• Inspired the Witcher game series a decade later (2007-ongoing)
• More to come, the author and series continue

Andrzej Sapkowski’s Geralt of Rivia is a “Witcher,” a superhuman trained to defeat monsters. After hundreds of years killing creatures, there are fewer threats and witchers. Actually there is less hunting monsters than Geralt sleuthing mysterious altercations. Sapkowski’s stories have conflicts that are not lone-Witcher-in-the-wild vs. monster conflict; they are more humans/vs strange forces in which Geralt referees (and usually kills). His investigative methods are a bit rougher than Sherlock Holmes. Each story was as if Conan was dumped into the Grimm's Fairy tales. But all is not grim. Lots of humor present is reminiscent of Fritz Leiber’s Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser series. Humans tend to persecute or shun the weird witchers; sustaining future witchers is addressed as the seeds of an apprenticeship are sown.

Geralt has dialogue with antagonists often. Lengthy interrogations are common. This approach allows for funny banter, philosophizing, and entertaining information-dumps. This makes for a fast, entertaining read. Sapkowski stands out as a leading non-English writer. No map, table of contents (TOC), or glossary were featured in the paperback translation. I provide the TOC below. The structure reveals the over-arching narrative of “the Voice of Reason” which attempts to connect all the others. This works pretty well, but is not always smooth. This was designed as an introduction to the series. I was impressed enough to order the Sword of Destiny when I was only half way through. It is not until the third book does a dedicated novel emerge. The series and the games continue to this day with books 7 and 8 awaiting English translation (as of 2016).

A wonderful read!

I bought this book after playing the wither 3 on ps4. I love the entire story and lore that accompanied the witches universe.

As immersed as I felt while playing the game, the book took me to the next level and I now want to buy the entire series of books.

I am a fan of Andrzej Sapowski's books and you will be too. It also looks really cool on my coffee table when I have guests over.

A breath of fresh air for western fantasy lovers.

I picked this up because I recently started playing the games. I honestly wish I had done that the other way around now, and gotten into the books first.

The Geralt of the books is much more cerebral than most monster hunters in modern fiction (more so than in the games, even), preferring to cure them of their curses or appeal to their senses of reason, when able, rather than just slashing them down. Most of the "monsters" he actually ends up slaying in the book are humans, which come off as being the biggest monsters of all (there's a particular story in this collection where that, in fact, seems to be the overriding lesson).

The stories are excellently written, with some nice takes on old fairy tales. I don't know if it's because these stories are originally from Eastern Europe, or just skill of the author, or what, but this was the first fantasy novel (or, rather, collection of fantasy short stories) I've read in a long time where I was pleasantly surprised to discover that I didn't know quite where things were going until they got there. Sapkowski doesn't stick to the same tropes we westerners are used to, or if he does, he uses them in unexpected ways. His monsters have just as much personality as his protagonists, and often have many of the same motivations. In the few stories that have outright villains, those villains are shown having understandable reasons for being... antagonistic. I hesitate to use the word "evil", because the author does an excellent job of showing that "evil" is, in many cases, a difference of perspective.

So, if you're a fan of good fantasy, I would definitely suggest picking this up, even if you've not played the games and don't plan to. I don't think you'll be disappointed with what you find in the world of The Witcher. I myself plan to do much more exploration of that world.

Decent buy...not my type of reading style though...

Don't get me wrong. Drolsbaugh does a great job telling his story of being a part of the Deaf culture and the hearing world. When he felt frustrated, I felt like I was going through it too. He's able to put you in his shoes and recreate his feelings about finding his place. I thought he did a great job with that.

Maybe I'm just not big on the journal-style readings. I felt like Drolsbaugh would start on one topic and then switch over to another really quick and then jump back to his original topic. I found it difficult to follow at times when he moved around a bit. When I journal, I write whatever comes to mind. Whatever I have down is down. I felt like that was what Drolsbaugh had put together, which is great for some readers but not for me. (I have trouble reading Anne Frank's diary even.)

As a hearing person, I found many parts of Drolsbaugh's book to be very sad. I felt like his message was, "The hearing world sucks and they don't understand us - I know this because I live in both worlds." Perhaps I misunderstood Drolsbaugh. I just felt a little bit sad inside while reading his book. I don't like when one of my identities gets clumped together - not sure if that makes any sense. For example, I'm American and I don't like it when I hear comments like, "All Americans are stuck-up and like to bully the rest of the world" because it's not true. Have you MET all Americans? Same with the hearing world. I don't think it sucks living in the hearing world or the Deaf world. Hearing is one of my identities. It makes me who I am too just as much as being Deaf makes Drolsbaugh who HE is. I don't think it's fair to put down one group/population, even if that group is the dominant one. As a person of color, I don't claim that all white people are racist and want to put us down.

Anyway, now I'm just rambling. The book is a pretty good read, but I didn't like the style of writing. It jumped around a lot and it took me a while to finish. Drolsbaugh's journey is quite an amazing one and I'm glad I was able to be a part of it.

A heart-felt story about finding one's identity

Mark Drolsbaugh tells a fascinating true story that demonstrates how a person's minority culture can be almost obliterated with the best of intentions by those in the majority. His story demonstrates that society today still will not believe the needs of a minority group, even when they express their needs in quite understandable words (signs). The beauty of this work, however, is that it is a happy story with no animosity toward those who would have Mark be someone other than who he really is. Mark's revelations about discovering his true culture, his successes which have followed his discovery, and his fulfillment as a Deaf person could be the story of so many other Deaf individuals. This book should be a MUST read for any hearing parent whose child has been identified with a hearing loss. The professional working with children who are Deaf or hard of hearing (especially those with prelingual hearing loss) should read this. It will provide them with a valuable insight into the life of a Deaf or hard of hearing child.

About the Author
Judith A. Boss earned her PhD in 1990 from Boston University, her MA from Dalhousie University in Canada in 1971, and her BA from the University of Western Australia in 1969. Prior to pursing a career in academia, she worked as a writer/researcher for the Nova Scotia Museum. She was on the faculty of the Department of Philosophy at the University of Rhode Island from 1988 to 1995 and worked as Assistant Director of Curriculum Affairs at Brown University School of Medicine until 2004, when she "retired" to return to full-time writing. She remained at Brown University as a visiting scholar with the philosophy department for several years while working on her textbooks. In addition to her philosophical interests, she completed a MS in Human Development at URI in 1991 and has led faculty workshops and written extensively on the topic of college student development. She was recipient of a URI Foundation Grant to study the effects of community service learning on students' moral development and has served as a grant application reviewer for the Corporation for National Service. The author of nine books, her publications include ANALYZING MORAL ISSUES and ETHICS FOR LIFE, both with McGraw-Hill. Her textbook THiNK, also with McGraw-Hill, just came out in 2009. She is published in, among other, The Journal of Moral Education, Public Affairs Quarterly, The Journal of Medical Ethics, Academic Medicine, Educational Theory, Free Inquiry, and The Journal of Experiential Education. During her spare time she volunteers with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Services and is active in the Appalachian Mountain Club. An avid traveler, she has traveled with students from the University of Rhode Island and Brown Medical School to work with underserved, indigenous people in Guatemala and Mexico. Her favorite travel destination, however, is Antarctica, and Blue Ice, a suspense/thriller she wrote that is set in Antarctica, is coming out in print next year. She lives in Rhode Island with her daughter, son-in-law and twin granddaughters.

In many countries, non-citizens are confronted with institutional and endemic discrimination and suffering. The situation has worsened since September 11, 2001, as several governments have detained or otherwise violated the rights of non-citizens in response to fears of terrorism. This book attempts to understand and respond to the challenges of international human rights law guarantees for non-citizens human rights.

About the Author

David Weissbrodt is the Regents Professor and Fredrikson & Byron Professor of Law at the University of Minnesota Law School. He is a world-renowned scholar and teacher of international human rights law. He is the author of 200 articles, books, and monographs. In 2001 Weissbrodt served as the first United States citizen since Eleanor Roosevelt to head a United Nations human rights body when he was elected as chairperson for the U.N. Sub-Commission on the Promotion and Protection of Human Rights. For 2000-2003 the Sub-Commission also designated Weissbrodt the U.N. Special Rapporteur on the rights of non-citizens.
