A Must Have for SLPs Who Tx. Pts. w/Aphasia

We had the first edition of this book at the facility in which I first worked. When I left that position to start at another facility my first purchase was this invaluable reference tool. I got this updated edition which is even more comprehensive than the first. It is not one of those books that you purchase because, "Hey, I know of that researcher. I bet this book will be very helpful," only to find that it's full of research data which, while valuable, provides little "real world" information that can be applied to your patient(s). I have referred to Helm-Estabrook's Manual of Aphasia Therapy with every patient with aphasia I have treated and have always been able to find something useful. I highly recommend that anyone working with patients with aphasia purchase this book, which is backed by research and provides wonderfully pragmatic, timely information from neuroanatomy to treatment.

My impression of this book was very positive. It is well illustrated, easy to read and understandable. I recommend the book to all students of this area, confident that it will give them a solid grounding in the basics, along with some specifics of occular biochemistry

Good text, but requires prior knowledge

I found this text to be well-written and very thorough at describing certain biochemical and physiological processes of the eye. However, even though each chapter has basic introductory information about each topic (enzymes, carbohydrates, lipids, etc), this should not be used in a setting in which students have not had prior coursework in biochem. If this is the case, another more detailed textbook should be used in conjunction.

William James Sidis (1898-1944) was born to a psychologist with some unorthodox ideas about child rearing, attended Harvard at an absurdly young age, burned out at 14, and spent most of the rest of his life working menial jobs and living in poverty. Dubbed a ``failed prodigy'' by the popular press, he lived out his years as an eccentric and a recluse. Wallace's book, the only biography of this most enigmatic of prodigies, gives us a balanced look at Sidis' up-bringing and a somewhat revisionist look at his later life. Sidis apparently was hard at work on manuscripts of various sorts even during his later years; this book is to my knowledge the only one that gives an account of that later work, which dealt with American Indians. New manuscripts by Sidis have surfaced since the writing of this book, including a book on traffic accident patterns.

Failed Prodigy or Failed Society--A Tale of Genius Incarnate

I read this book shortly after its initial appearance, and have cited it repeatedly to friends and colleagues as a must read. A terrific popular level book by an author of wide interests (in the day) which explores the human condition at so many levels. Here was the prototypical genius, those infrequently occurring persons born with abilities that suggest the distant future of human evolution for the rest of us, living in our world, and trying to cope with the curiosity of the masses. Born to psychiatrist parents, the best and brightest of his day, who were friends with William James, psychologist/philosopher, one would have expected a blazingly brilliant career. And indeed one started out that way, but the incomprehensibility of those around him, even those of great capacity in his world, created a mental gauntlet of terrible stress that eventually drove him into self-exile and obscurity. A wasted mind in a way, and a telling indictment against humanity's capacity to affirm rather than fear great ability. And what I love most is the author's ability to portray Sidis' sense of wonder and playful desire to be of service that pervaded much of his work. It just adds to the bitter sweet encounter you will find in the life story of William James Sidis. After reading it you may want to visit his archives at sidis.net. As with most geniuses, he was way ahead of his time, and made some interesting predictions.

I came across this book while I was studying Montessori. Many of the methods that Sidis' parents applied were the same that Montessori discovered. Today, a Montessori education costs thousands. Sidis' parents were poor. It shows what determination and ideas can achieve. Prior to finding this Book, I also discovered Sidis on Wikipedia and thought he was fascinating but misunderstood and abused by hyperbole from the media. Although I have just started reading this Book, it is fascinating, a perfect book for anyone who is considering Montessori's `way of life'.

Stunning effects by manipulating the amount of moisture

The example paintings in Joseph Zbukvic's "Mastering Atmosphere and Mood" are stunning. By manipulating the amount of moisture ON the paper and IN the wash of paint, Zbuvic creates strong contrast between ethereal washes and densely painting architectural or landscape elements.
Zbuvic uses a device he calls a clock, which consists of a circle divided into wedges; the left side gauging the amount of water on the paper (from shiny wet to bone dry) and the right side gauging the amount of water mixed into the paint, from weak "tea" to "butter" or thick paint. This is rather original, but it does communicate an awareness of the moisture levels in both paint and paper to the artist. One example painting that really stands out is a rainy scene of downtown Melbourne, Australia. The street is lightly washed to allow the paper beneath to create the white shine of a wet street; the buildings and headlight reflections are painted more densely to provide either solidity (the building) or glow (the headlights.)
Most books on watercolor demonstrate a layered method of washes followed by glazes (paint over paint.) The end result can often be muddy for beginners in watercolor. This method is quite different in how it describes laying down washes and glazes, and can help the watercolorist achieve transparent atmosphere effects by paying attention to the water. If you've run into a brick wall with your current method of painting, this might be a great book to give a boost to your technique.

Beautiful book but not for beginners

One of the most amazing things about this book besides it gorgeous illustrations is that it is not another cotton candy, trick laden, watercolor book by a workshop star.
The artist and the paintings are deep, challenging and beautifull though I am not thrilled by some color choices I am by the integrity and depth this fellow brings to a medium that can all too often be made into wall paper designs.
His work is not easily apporached or copied and that is refreshing and daunting at the same time. He says it best when he warns that skill can only come from work and not from tricks. It was an eye opener reading about the effects of dampness and the state of the pigments themselves.
I will be humbly working in his shadow for a loooooong while and loving evry moment.

Can't recommend for the price

Joseph Zbukvic is a talented artist and the works in the book are terrific. But you won't learn much from this book. His watercolor clock idea is perhaps a nice teaching aid but the basic idea- about using paper mositure and brush loading to good effect- is nothing you won't learn from very fundamental watercolor technique and just experimenting on your own. Having looked at Zbukvic's website and a video, I will say that he has one great hint: connect your shapes, and this is done using lost and found edges (let edges of some shapes be indistinct so shapes are connected). He also emphasizes values, but this is basic technique and no revelation.

I don't see the book as nearly worth the money (at more than $50). Alvaro Castagnet paints almost exactly like Zbukvic; I can barely tell them apart. Although Castagnet's book is nearly non-informative, get it for the images (at much less cost). I would also recommend one of Zbukvic's DVDs ([...]) as less expensive and probably overall more informative. For context, look at the Amercian Watercolor Society website and see the artists' links and the great variety of terrific watercolors, many of them polar opposites of Zbukvic in technique. Charles Reid has good basic instruction.

Delightful Sequel

I really enjoyed the first book so I figured I was bound to enjoy the second book and yes, I did. Although this book had more cookies and candy than regular meals, I truly enjoyed it and tried some of the recipes like the Arby's Sauce and Nabisco's Nutter Butter cookies. (No, I didn't make the silly peanut shape. Yes, they tasted just like the real thing.) I see that some reviewers were hoping for more main course stuff which Todd Wilbur supplied in his Top Secret Restaurant Recipes. If you are looking for snack stuff, this book is great and up your alley. If you are looking for main courses, you won't enjoy this book as much.

A lot of fun, but don't expect miracles

If the poor condition of the library copy is any indication, More Top Secret Recipes is a very popular book!

Todd Wilbur has a number of books, and it can be a little confusing sorting them out. There are three "Top Secret Recipes" books, Top Secret Recipes, More Top Secret Recipes (this book) and Even More Top Secret Recipes. These books focus on what Wilbur calls "convenience foods." That is, most packaged sweets and fast food. He also has a book Top Secret Restaurant Recipes, in which he attempts to duplicate the foods of mostly casual dining restaurants like Chili's and Applebee's. He also has a book solely on drinks.

Wilbur explains in the Introduction of More Top Secret Recipes that these are not the actual recipes used by restaurants, and he did not obtain them through bribery, theft other illegal or illicit means. He starts with the ingredient list on packages of food and modifies the relative amounts, or with fast food, tries to identify the ingredients by taste. He admits that the real producers of these foods often use custom ingredients unavailable to the consumer, and that the goal was to match the texture and flavor of the food, and appearance is secondary.

So why try to clone commercially-available food? In both More Top Secret Recipes and Even More Top Secret Recipes, the author mentions availability. Some of the foods are regional, and you may not get them where you live. In the introduction to More Top Secret Recipes, he gives a list of reasons including low cost and curiosity. I'm not so sure about the cost argument, since a dozen Three Musketeers had $5 of chocolate chips in it alone, but the curiosity is what applied to me. I just wanted to know, "Can I really duplicate these commercial foods at home?"

This book contains recipes cloning the likes of McDonald's, Nabisco, Carl's Jr. and Taco Bell. Every recipe includes a history of the food item, something alone which makes this book valuable, and a dimensioned engineering graphic of the product. In addition, More Top Secret Recipes includes an introduction with questions from readers, like, "What have you heard from the companies whose products you are copying," (nothing) and "After testing all of these recipes, aren't you a huge, fat pig?" (No.) The recipes make as much use as possible of premade food and mixes. For example, most candy bars are coated with melted chocolate chips, so you will not find that you have to crush cocoa beans, or perform any such low-level task.

So far from this book, I have made (attempted to make) Cinnabon Cinnamon Rolls, M&M/Mars' Three Musketeers, Nabisco Chips Ahoy! and Nabisco Oreo cookies.

The Cinnabon Cinnamon Rolls were a success. But then, I've never had the real thing, so I can't compare. My wife wasn't sure about the cream cheese frosting being right, but we both loved them anyway. The Three Musketeers were another pretty good success. Of course, I can't duplicate the exact shape and size that M&M/Mars can with millions of dollars of machines, and the chocolate coating was a little thick, and never got really firm, but the texture and taste were dead-on. Chips Ahoy! are kind of personal because my grandmother used to make them. Really. They didn't turn out dark enough without overbaking (remember the disclaimers), but they resulted with the perfect, crispy texture of the real thing. However, the taste wasn't quite right. They were so good, though, that when I make chocolate chip cookies from now on, I will use this recipe instead of the traditional Toll House recipe (The main difference seems to be that the Chips Ahoy! recipe omits eggs.) The Oreos were just plain bad. The filling was not at all firm enough (the consistency of cake icing - which it basically is.) My cookies were too thin, but still chewy although baking the recommended time. Playing with the thickness and baking time and temperature may give better results. For many of these recipes, rolling pin rings would be beneficial to assure proper thickness.

Using this book was fun and informative. I've had mixed results using these books. In short, don't expect miracles with every recipe.

Buyer beware...

Don't get me wrong: Todd Wilbur's cookbooks are fun with a capital "F", but if you expect to re-create fast foods and chain-restaurant favorites in your own kitchen using his books, you're in for a nasty surprise. Unless, of course, you already possess a fair amount of kitchen common sense. For example, if you try to fry his "Dunkin Donuts" at the recommended temperature of 350 degrees, you WILL end up with pumpernickel bread in less than 2 minutes (try 280 degrees, instead). Should you follow his recipe for the Olive Garden's Soupa Toscana, what you end up with is a muddy kale & potato mess after 2 hours of boiling, with separated cream on top (contrary to his recipe, simmer for just 30 minutes instead of 2 hours, and add the cream at the end instead of the beginning. Also, use half of his recommended amount of red pepper flakes). If you add the 2 cups of water that's called for in his recipe for Wendy's Chili, what you will get is a thin tomato & bean soup, not chili; skip the water, and the chili comes out very good. Enlist the services of a psychic if you try to make Hostess Twinkies, because his list of ingredients at the beginning of the recipe is different from what he describes in the actual recipe itself. I don't regret buying his books, but keep in mind that just as Todd Wilbur had to play detective in "breaking" these recipes, so will the reader who tries to reproduce them, because they serve as loose guidelines at very best. You will have to do some gumshoe work as well, if you expect these recipes to work. But hey, at least he gives us somewhere to start. And it is fun! Oh yeah, the Oreo cookies are pretty close to the real thing, by the way.

Samkhya, also Sankhya, is one of the six schools of classical Indian philosophy. Sage Kapila is traditionally considered to be the founder of the Sankhya school, although no historical verification is possible. It is regarded as the oldest of the philosophical systems in India. This was later incorporated as being one of the six orthodox (astika) (that which recognizes vedic authority) systems of Hindu philosophy with the major text of the theistic school being the extant Sankhya Karika, written by Ishvara Krishna, circa 200 [AD]. There are no purely Samkhya schools existing today in Hinduism, but its influence is felt in Yoga and Vedanta schools of philosophy. Its philosophy regards the universe as consisting of two eternal realities: Purusha and Prakriti. It is therefore a strongly dualist and enumerationist philosophy. The Purusha is the centre of consciousness, whereas the Prakriti is the source of all material existence. The Samkhya school has deeply influenced the Hindu Yoga school of philosophy. They are sometimes referred together as Samkhya - yoga school.

Several sentences were awkward or simply didn't make sense, several instances of simple incorrect grammar (your vs you're), and he kept calling the read "my friend or bud". Otherwise, it was interesting.

HALFWAY BETWEEN MYSTERY AND TRAGEDY

Sharr White’s The Other Place (2011, 2013) starts in St. Thomas, then shuttles back and forth between there and Cape Cod. Juliana, a brilliant scientist in her early fifties, is giving a lecture --actually a sales pitch-- on a revolutionary protein therapy she has developed and patented called Identamyl. She knows her audience. She cracks jokes at them, plays on their prejudices and work habits. Then she notices a girl in a yellow bikini at the back of the audience. She is disconcerted by the young woman’s presence. Who is she? Why is she there, and why dressed in that incongruous outfit, at a lecture for doctors only?

Then, with no noticeable transition other than a change in Juliana’s voice and a shift in the direction she looks, Juliana is talking to her son-in-law on a cell phone. She wants to talk to her daughter but her daughter won’t talk to her. Why not? What’s happened between them to alienate the daughter from Juliana? Juliana’s husband enters. Juliana says he plans to divorce her, he says he doesn’t. It goes back and forth, there are more contradictions between Juliana’s story and what her husband says happened, there are more sightings of the girl in the bikini --truth becomes more and more muddled as the play progresses. Something, it is clear, is seriously wrong with Juliana, but what? And what has happened in her family, between her daughter and her, between Juliana and her husband?

This is a play that lies halfway between mystery and tragedy and succeeds admirably at both.

I bought the script because a local theatre has this play in their season, and I was mesmerized reading it. Difficult subject matter but told in such a beautiful way.

shockingly good

This stunning play by Sharr White takes place in multiple locations and at different times. The principal characters are Juliana and Ian, a couple in their early 50s who are both at the top of their professions. We learn early on that the couple is divorcing and that there has been an estrangement from their only daughter, Laurel.

I think this would be difficult for people who are not very familiar with reading plays. People are talking in multiple places and times at the same time. You need what Junot Diaz calls "reading muscles." The story is amazing. There are parts that are funny, philosophical and deeply sad.

No spoiler here: very quickly, we realize that a major characters has a significant health issue - we just don't know what it is. It's handled deftly and with incredible accuracy.

I was deeply moved when I read this play.
