Good book...poor packaging

I was happy to receive this book quickly. I needed it for work. I was dissapointed that the book was waterlogged when I opened it. Seems as though it was sitting in the rain, and was not packaged in plastic. After several days of letting the book dry, I finally got to read through it. I suppose this was more the fault of nature, but other book sellers packaged their products in plastic, now I can see how very important that is. Thanks for the book...use plastic next time.

The most authoritative, yet quite challenging for biginners

No doubt that this book is one of the most authoritative and orthodox textbooks in this field. With prolific cases and legal reasoning, this book offers a clear and profound understanding on "principles of international law," especially its Sources, Jurisdictions, and subjects, and basic theories thereof. A must have for those majoring in international law, I should say.
As for beginners, however, this book might seem quite challenging. A better-balanced structure would make Prof. Brownlie��s book look all the more perfect; despite its overwhelming reasoning and theories, the book somewhat lacks in such topics as the ICC and law of war. For beginners who want to learn general aspects of international law, I would rather recommend Prof. Peter Malanczuk��s ��Akehurst��s modern introduction of international law,�� or Prof. Malcolm Shaw��s ��International Law.��

Brownlie remains a standard in the study of international law. Not only is it an excellent text in itself, but the copious citations make it a very valuable research tool. Having had a long association with the Jessup International Law Moot Court competition, I highly recommend this text to all students preparing for the Jessup. Its inclusion as part of the research process should be considered a must.

Possibly the best text on international law

This book, by the late Sir Ian Brownlie, Chichele Professor of Public International Law at Oxford University 1980-99, is possibly the best text on international law. His chapters on war and peace are of special merit.

He observes, "The member States of the United Nations, or at least the majority, recognised the legality of wars of liberation in certain conditions."

Brownlie comments on NATO's 1999 attack on Yugoslavia: "There is a preliminary and major difficulty in classifying the action. This because the authenticity of the subsequent claims that the action had humanitarian motives is substantially undermined by the fact that, beginning in October 1998, the threats of force were linked directly to a collateral political agenda, that is, the acceptance by Yugoslavia of various political `demands' concerning the status of Kosovo, these `demands' being presented under threat of a massive bombing campaign. This background has been ignored by many commentators."

He points out, "The position in 1999, when the operations took place, was that there was little or no authority and little or no state practice to support the right of individual States to use force on humanitarian grounds in international law. ... State practice has been overwhelmingly hostile to the concept of intervention on such a selective and subjective basis. The weak legal position was recognised by the United Kingdom Government when it informed the Select Committee on Foreign Affairs of the House of Commons of its aim of establishing in the United Nations `new principles governing humanitarian intervention'."

Brownlie notes, "It is difficult to bring forcible regime change within concept of self-defence or the principle of self-determination. ... the international consensus [is] that individual States, or a group of States, cannot resort to force (for purposes other than self-defence) except with the express authorization of the Security Council." The Foreign Ministers of the Group of 77 (actually 132 states) declared on 24 September 1999 that "They rejected the so-called right of humanitarian intervention, which has no basis in the United Nations Charter or international law."

Brownlie observes, "Since 1945 the practice of States generally has been opposed to anticipatory self-defence. The Israeli attack on an Iraqi nuclear reactor in 1981 was strongly condemned as a `clear violation of the Charter of the United Nations' in Security Council Resolution 487 (1981) (adopted unanimously)."

He points out drily, "The Bush doctrine, published in 2002, claims a right of `pre-emptive action' against States who are seen as potential adversaries. This doctrine is applicable in the absence of any proof of an attack or even an imminent attack. This doctrine lacks a legal basis, but it does have an historical parallel, the attack on Serbia by Austria-Hungary in 1914."

Brownlie also criticises `the gross and persistent measures of discrimination and breaches of humanitarian law on the part of Israel against the Palestinian people and their institutions'.

If you are seeking to improve your relationship with alcohol, this book is the answer

Background: I’m a woman in my early 30s and I’ve considered myself a “problem drinker” for the better part of the past 10 years. My habit was 2-3 glasses of wine most evenings - more or less depending. My biggest downfall was that I was someone who on certain occasions couldn’t stop drinking once I started, which always lead to painful consequences.

I was on a quest to improve my relationship with alcohol, be able to moderate, slow down, and make better choices; my ultimate goal was simply to feel in control around alcohol. This book changed my relationship with alcohol without any feelings of deprivation or suffering, nor the need for willpower or stressful exercises in self-control. I had previously read Allen Carr’s Easy Way to Stop Drinking and some of the information stuck with me, but the language was a bit dated and the motivation to keep improving my relationship with alcohol was short lived.

After finishing This Naked Mind, it felt as if any temptation to drink and the struggle to control cravings were wiped clean from my brain. For the first time in a decade I feel in control and empowered to effortlessly make informed conscious decisions about drinking, where before I consistently gave in to physical and psychological cravings to drink even when I didn’t actually want to give in. That’s the battle most of us face when we become regular drinkers, and This Naked Mind will help you win that battle. I am able to do everything I did as a drinker, including hanging out in bars with friends, without any of the anxiety that I used to experience struggling to moderate or resist temptation. Life is just more enjoyable now.

Annie Grace offers a lot of personal accounts in her book which I found helpful and relatable. Some of the information is repetitive but that is intentional and most of all it is important, because repetition is needed to undo the deep conditioning from society where drinking culture dominates!

You don’t have to label yourself an alcoholic or addict to benefit from this book. No matter how much or how little you drink, if you are seeking to improve your relationship with alcohol, This Naked Mind is the answer. I would even recommend this book to those who feel they have a healthy relationship with alcohol, because the information contained in this book is invaluable and we are all better off for knowing it!

"Maybe I'll Remember My Next 30 Years" - Tim McGraw

30 + years ago I had my first experience with alcohol drinking Bud "Talls" in my friend's backyard during a sleepover. This marked a gradual descent into a completely mindless relationship with alcohol that lasted well into my adult life (actually truth be told as recent as 2 weeks ago (10/12). I had the typical college experience of binge drinking. Now married with 3 kids, this pattern continued but under a different context as a highly functioning alcoholic progressing professionally, being somewhat present as a Father & Husband now drinking consistently and on occasion heavily. My friends and work peers would not consider me a problem drinker as we all had the same consumption patterns and view toward booze as a stress reliever, a requirement for social events, ect. A practicing Catholic, I took the brave step one year of giving booze up for lent (40 days). I suffered tremendously with cravings and feelings of deprivation until I hit St. Patrick's day where I took my 1 day of "dispensation" and extended it indefinitely and then gave up - sliding back to the comfort of old patterns. The realization of the harm I was doing to myself and those around me ate me up from the inside out, but could not change the pattern with "will power" as demonstrated by my failed attempt at temporary abstinence mentioned above. A few ago weeks I was on my LinkedIn account where I saw Annie's post asking for feedback on 3 potential choices for a cover for her new book. The post caught my eye and I eventually found my way to her website thisnakedmind.com. I downloaded her book and "consumed it" (no pun intended) in a day and a half. I literally have done a complete 180 and found the insights needed to completely turn around my conscious (and more importantly unconscious) views on alcohol and have not touched a drop since. I know it's only been a short time, but I see things with a mental clarity that has not existed since I was 16 years old when I started my descent. Physically, my body is thanking me with renewed boundless energy as well. I invite anyone who has been thinking about changing their relationship with this drug to read this book. It is truly revolutionary. Thank you Annie for helping me get back my life!

This is a great book

Every adult human should read this book. I had been worried about myself and my gradually increasing alcohol consumption for a number of years. After going through al heartbreaking divorce (in no small part due to my drinking behavior), and after trying for two years to moderate my drinking to a "normal" level, I read Allen Carr's book The Easy Way to Stop Drinking. While I liked Carr's message, the book contained some gaps in logic and seemed just a tad bit superficial and cheer-leaderish. The Naked Mind focuses on drinking and fills in the gaps in the Easy Way philosophy with science as well and in-depth first-hand experience in using a similar philosophy to cure alcohol abuse. As an added bonus, I have started to apply the concepts and lessons of the book to other areas of my life where I have displayed unhealthy thinking and/or behavior and it is proving very effective. I highly recommend this book.

About the Author
Dany Laferrière worked as a journalist in his native Haiti during the notorious Duvalier regime, immigrating to Canada in 1976. He is the author of several acclaimed novels and the recipient of numerous awards, including the Prix RFO du Livre 2002 and Le Grand Prix du Livre de Montréal 2009, and in 2009 he was named Quebec Personality of the Year.

David Homel has translated over 30 books, many by Quebec authors. He won the Governor General's Literary Award in translation in 1995 for Why Must a Black Writer Write About Sex? by Dany Laferrière; his translation of Laferrière's How to Make Love to a Negro was nominated in 1988; and he won the prize in 2001 with fellow translator Fred A. Reed for Fairy Wing. His novels, which include Sonya & Jack, Electrical Storms, and The Speaking Cure have been published in several languages. Homel lives in Montreal, Quebec.

Enough of the Serious books - pick this one up for some serious laughs! Excellent!!!

I was asked to review this book, and I was really thinking it was going to be kind of like instruction or a manual or something like that. That is so not the case. I agree that it is brilliant!!

These two black men are living in a run down apartment. They are visited by various white women. They all have names like "miz beauty" or "miz literature". I loved the different names they came up with. It's better than just saying a normal name. The names they give show a better picture of the women they are with.

Finally, a book that isn't all serious! This book was so hilarious! If you are looking for a serious book about how to make love, this isn't it!!! Even though it isn't actually a manual on the act of making love, it can get pretty explicit.

It is funny, engaging

Let's be honest, this is a hard book to carry around in public, hence the kindle is the ideal format for reading! I had previously read Americanah, and this, though much briefer and rawer, offers the same outsider look at a culture. It is funny, engaging, and enlightening. It feels very modern although there are a few reminders that this was written more than 30 years ago.

It was a book group selection and I approached it with hesitation, it wouldn't have been my choice. After reading it...I've recommended it!

In his fourth alternate history, Tsouras (Disaster at D-Day, etc.), a senior analyst of the U.S. Army National Ground Intelligence Center, brings together a number of experts in the Pacific war to show how, with only some minor adjustments to actual events, the Japanese could have either won the war in the Pacific or else so stymied the Allies that Japan would have been able to keep some of its early conquests. The 10 chapters by 10 authors cover the gamut from an early conflict between Japan and the Soviet Union to the invasion of Japan. When American planes low on fuel had a choice while searching for the Japanese carriers at Midway, what if their commander had decided to fly to Midway to refuel rather than continue toward the last reported position of the enemy? (All three American carriers might have been sunk and the Japanese would have gone on to neutralize Hawaii and move in on the U.S. West Coast from there.) Other scenarios include a Japanese invasion of Australia (which is eventually defeated), a thrust into British India, an American evacuation of Guadalcanal, a disaster at Leyte Gulf and heavy losses during the invasion of Japan. Complementing 24 illustrations (not seen by PW) and 15 maps scattered throughout, brief summaries at the end of each chapter inform readers of what actually happened most will be relieved. Some far fetched.

All " chapters " display author's grasp & understanding of what occurred & what could have happened.

Difficulty with " Alternative History ", is that there is so much room for debate.

However, the most important factor is entertainment.

Each chapter was about 30 pages, written by a different author with a different take on an alternative history of WWII. Very entertaining and well thought out. I read it over a period of several weeks between other books and very much enjoyed it.

The What-Ifs of WWII...

The subtitle says the alternate history of how the Japanese won the Pacific War which is not totally true. While many of the chapters deal with their alternate choices, and sometimes just plain good luck, at Pearl Harbor and Midway not all the new pathways have Japan winning the war. Many of the authors are just too honest and some of the end results, while interesting and dramatic, don't bring the Japanese victory. Sometimes it seems to bring them even faster to defeat and death.

but for smaller scales I found it to be a BIG waste of money

I bought this to make a 1/64 scale garage diorama. Even though the plans are somewhat included for this scale ( you have to piece together a parts list from 1/87 scale), there is no way you could ever cut the small pieces in this plan at that scale. 1/24 and bigger and this book would probably work, but for smaller scales I found it to be a BIG waste of money.
