The best medical book I read bar none.

Basic science and ABSITE knowledge is one thing. Which frankly is relatively easy to achieve if you are good at self-study. The wisdom and operative pearls shared shared by these masters, gained through incredibly vast experience, is something totally different. It is almost like cheating to have this book compared to those who don't.
Only objection is that it is a bit old (2004) and some things have changed... like the emergence of better IR and endovascular techniques. And it is not intended to be a detailed technical reference. But the Yoda-like wisdom remains. Not only for trauma surgeons but all acute care or general surgeons.
I never even write reviews. It is that good.

Best surgery book ever

the title says all you really need to know. This book presents a logical and often comical approach to the surgical trauma patient. While some parts may be outdated or controversial in our age of ebm, the core components of how to approach a crashing patient who has suffered penetrating trauma have not changed. This book was clearly written by a Trauma surgeon for surgeons. It is my favorite medical book and i wish that this style of writing was more common as it makes for a quick and memorable read.

I freakin love this book!

I was recently reminded of this book during an online discussion about surgical texts. My residency program was not heavy on penetrating trauma so I purchased Top Knife a few years ago as a "How To" guide for the oral boards. I could not have been more pleased with that decision.

Top Knife is succinct yet detailed, timely yet timeless and dare I say it, funny! Several times throughout the book the authors will state something to the effect of. "The books tell you to do X; we have never been able to get X to work. If you can, please share your secret with us!" Maybe I'm easily amused but those passages made me laugh out loud as most books are filled with impractical advice that would never work outside of BMS or some other rarified theatre.

We now recommend this to our residents as reading for their trauma rotation and board exams. It's that good.

Helpful - But Will Probably Raise More Questions Than Answers for the Novice...

Having participated as a team member, led (been a team leader), and hosted (run 3 at once) Shingijutsu-Kaizen, I can say this book is true to their method. After reading the book twice, and taking copious notes (the equivalent of 4 A4-sized pages using 10-point font), I below highlight some potential pro and con of this particular text as I see it today. For your consideration:

Pro:
+ Use of the "No Good" concept for stimulating creativity/breaking paradigms is a best practice you should consider adopting
+ Promotion of learn by doing also a personal favorite
+ Some clever definitions via quote/phrase/simple observation - which I think many with find thought provoking
+ Emphasis on respect for people (several places) are very helpful for quoting/reference and I will use often
+ Excellent summary for instructor-led kaizen process in Chapter 10. Short and to the point - enough to do it correctly
+ Contains a simple beauty and power I cannot seem to describe. Post a reply if you can... I would like to hear your thoughts on this topic.

Con:
- Majority of this book contains listings of lesson topics to try, discuss, or reflect upon during kaizen, hansei, or kata. In some ways this is a pro, in some ways a con. However, after much thought, I list this as a con because given the vehicle delivery (text) it is unlikely the wisdom herein will be squeezed out wiithout some additional force (a casual reader will not have an adequate vehicle). I think a chapter on establishing/promotion of a regimen to stimulate digestion of this large "meal" into small "bites" would be very helpful.
- There is a void on management engagement. I am unsure how to go about scolding my COO, VPs, or anyone else for that matter to create the dire circumstances that in turn force people to be more creative. I need help understanding how I can do this and remain employed, or at least not be hated and thus shunned.
- I'd prefer a hard cover. I get this is a raft of sorts - good to get me so far, then I will outgrow it and leave it behind - but still, hardcover is more enduring.

Neutral:
> The author suggests we write in the book - take notes and reflect on what we learned. I just cannot bring myself to do this. However, I did take notes, lots of them, and then re-wrote them to help commit them to memory and challenge myself - did I really get the message?
> Selfishly, this is short and I would enjoy more content. However, learning by doing is best so do not let this dissuade you from reading this book.

Bottom line: This book is recommended. There is much goodness within it's pages and already have quoted the book several times. It is my hope you buy it and use it to help others. Disclaimer: I read many of Bob's posts and like them very much. These are also recommended.

Back to the source of successful Lean transformations

Just finished reading (several times) the book and the first thing that stroke me is the incredible amount of wisdom concentrated in 98 pages…. The second thing was – although the subtitle is Kaizen for the next generation – even the older generations have a lot to learn from it. Just an example: when Nakao-san says “Master the basics” doesn't it trigger the automatic question: “What are the basics?” Now try to find that answer from the ocean of Lean literature out there. The pertinence of each of the phrases cited in this book is backed by the fact that it comes from the one that actively participated in one of the most successful Lean transformations to date.

A must read for Lean people and ones wanting to learn Lean

I have been trained by Chihiro Nakao for over 20 years and I have to say that Bob Emiliani has shown the true essences of Nakao San in this book, and why he is truly the best Kaizen sensei that I know.
This book is a must read for anybody starting there Lean Journey and will be on my must read list for all my Lean people.

good for genealogy research!

I am making headway through this book at present. The kindle version is all over the place, meaning that the pages dont download in sequence and you have to go backwards and forwards through the book to read it chronologically, which would put some people off but I am persevering. THe reason I am reading it is because it gives excellent background information to anyone who is interested in Irish genealogy, as it gives first hand descriptiions of life for Irish people at a specific time in history, so if you are researching that era, you would do well to try and wade through this book. As such, it is not a novel, nor does it have a storyline, but draws a picture of Ireland and the IRish through the eyes of another.

I've been taking online courses and reviewing many textbooks over the past 38 years - this is as dry as they get.
The publisher didn't spend any money in paying for photos or graphics. The cover is the best part.
I'm a 4.0/4.0 student, usually maintaining 100% or greater in each my courses over the history of my academic learning.
They needed to spend money. They should also have a companion site where they get more engaging with videos, .mp3 and .mp4.
I was so very disappointed. They sucked the joy out of the topic.

Sandra Clark is a Senior Research Fellow at the Institute of English Studies and Professor Emeritus of Renaissance Literature at Birkbeck, University of London.

Absolutely Wonderful Book!

I cannot sing this book's praises enough. Prof. de Mattei has knocked it out of the ballpark with this book. He presents Pius IX as he ought to be presented--from within the context of his own times and in light of Catholic teaching.

Great Insight into Secret European Societies at work in mid 1800's to secularize Europe and specifically Italian Unification

The Catholic Church World View is discussed in this book and how and why it unsuccessfully opposed the secularization of Italy. Pius IX foresaw the de-humanization of individuals by secular elites who believed that centrally controlled government by "enlightened" rationalists was better for the common good than any other option. The book covers their masterful deception of the populous who are gullible enough buy into their vision. It also frankly exposes the Vatican's inability to counter their arguments in public. Pius IX foresaw the underlying fallacies and fatal flaws of political 'isms': Communism, Nazism, and to a more limited extent unbridled capitalism. For those seeking a greater knowledge of the Catholic World View recommend read Catholic Catechism, 2nd edition. It appears daunting, but for mind's trying to make sense of what the 1800's brought into the1900's and the continuation of secularism without an alternative rational, its worth the read.

Wonderful view of Pio Nono's Papacy

This book is a wonderful historical overview of the papacy of Bl. Pius IX. To say the least, it's intense - it proposes to give an vision of his papacy, as well as a defense of Pius' major accomplishments, all within a few pages. Also, he gives endless footnotes to back up all of his claims. A good insight to the life of a good and holy man.
