An excellent follow up
By Carl A. Carter
I first read McCloskey's 3I series (Industrious et al) and enjoyed them. Trilisk Ruins came out in a sort of parallel history, but I enjoyed it! Archaeology and tomb raiding of an alien site with internal security AND UN cops on their trail! Great fun, but many questions unresolved about alien races and their motivations.
Trilisk AI follows up and answers many of the questions and introduces more! Excellent. The same lovable (?!) characters and some new, new adventures on new worlds... A fun easy read for a summer weekend. But I do recommend reading the first book first.
I have been reading SF for decades - started in the John W Campbell days - and still at it. This author is introducing a new style and new ideas. He isn't as famous as Charles Stross or Jack McDevitt, but he shows similar promise.
Give him a try! You'll enjoy him!

Realy good, fixes some problems from book 1
By Amazon Customer
I wish I could give half star reviews as this world be a 4.5. I definitely think this is a better book then the first in the series and I'm very glad that I read it. The biggest problem I had with the first book was that I didn't really care about any of the characters. That definitely wasn't the case this time as I spent the entire time thinking that someone was going to die, and hoping it wouldn't be someone that I liked.
I think there was a good balance of plot and action in this book and definitely recommend it.

Dialog is bad, seriously harms story. Still interesting ideas
By SLav
After Trilisk Ruins, I had mixed feelings about the series. I liked where the story was going, but felt the human characters were flat and unrealized. I realize now I might have been wrong. The characters could be entirely fleshed out (I think they might be slightly more fleshed out than they were in the first book), but the dialog is so flat and perfunctory that I can't tell. While the story exposes some new and interesting ideas, it doesn't have enough of them to keep my interest in the series.
The reason that Shiny the alien comes off as having more depth is that his dialog is unique and interesting in the first book because the author branched out and really explored the alien attempting to speak English. This makes him more interesting. But even Shiny is reduced to the equivalent of 1 word statements for almost this entire second book. Much of the character motivation and reaction to the world is just totally lost in the dialog. A lot of the interactions with Shiny appear to be following the trope of forcing limited conversation to allow the story to be directed the way the author wants rather than finding motivations and reasons through the characters. It is as if the author couldn't make his characters conform to the story he wanted if they were rational and allowed to communicate freely, so he just kept them from doing so by the expedient of not having them talk when they have no reason not to.
Even worse, I'm pretty sure we are missing plot points due to poor dialog. There are several scenes which either don't make sense, or feel disjointed because the dialog is so murky I have no idea why the characters have chosen to speak/act as they do. The previous book's focus on setting and Shiny the alien really covered up a lot of this (though other reviewers pointed out the poor human dialog). This book is much more dialog heavy, with less real plot (the universe is starting to feel empty rather than well fleshed out as well) and the failure of the dialog is really starting to shine through. It also feels like a few plot segments were moved around after the story was originally written, but not well.
I am in serious doubt as to whether I will pick up the next book in this series.
