Written immediately after the end of World War II, this morally complex Holocaust memoir is notable for its exact depiction of the grim details of life in Warsaw under the Nazi occupation. "Things you hardly noticed before took on enormous significance: a comfortable, solid armchair, the soothing look of a white-tiled stove," writes Wladyslaw Szpilman, a pianist for Polish radio when the Germans invaded. His mother's insistence on laying the table with clean linen for their midday meal, even as conditions for Jews worsened daily, makes palpable the Holocaust's abstract horror. Arbitrarily removed from the transport that took his family to certain death, Szpilman does not deny the "animal fear" that led him to seize this chance for escape, nor does he cheapen his emotions by belaboring them. Yet his cool prose contains plenty of biting rage, mostly buried in scathing asides (a Jewish doctor spared consignment to "the most wonderful of all gas chambers," for example). Szpilman found compassion in unlikely people, including a German officer who brought food and warm clothing to his hiding place during the war's last days. Originally published in Poland in 1945 but then suppressed by the Communist authorities, this memoir of survival in the Warsaw Ghetto joins the ranks of Holocaust memoirs notable as much for their literary value as for their historical significance. Szpilman, a Jewish classical pianist, played the last live music broadcast from Warsaw before Polish Radio went off the air in September 1939 because of the German invasion. In a tone that is at once dispassionate and immediate, Szpilman relates the horrors of life inside the ghetto. But his book is distinguished by the dazzling clarity he brings to the banalities of ghetto life, especially the eerie normalcy of some social relations amid catastrophic upheaval. He shows how Jewish residents of the Polish capital adjusted to life under the occupation: "The armbands branding us as Jews did not bother us, because we were all wearing them, and after some time living in the ghetto I realized that I had become thoroughly used to them." Using a reporter's powers of description, Szpilman, who is still alive at the age of 88, records the chilling conversations that took place as Jews waited to be transported to their deaths. "We're not heroes!" he recalls his father saying. "We're perfectly ordinary people, which is why we prefer to risk hoping for that 10 per cent chance of living." In a twist that exemplifies how this book will make readers look again at a history they thought they knew, he details how a German captain saved his life. Employing language that has more in common with the understatement of Primo Levi than with the moral urgency of Elie Wiesel, Szpilman is a remarkably lucid observer and chronicler of how, while his family perished, he survived thanks to a combination of resourcefulness and chance. AP World History Review: An Unforgettable Story of Survival and Beating the Odds

I enjoyed reading The Pianist very much. It gave me a deeper insight about the conditions that Jews faced during the Holocaust: their immense and seemingly eternal, and almost unrealistic suffering that they experienced over the period of six years time. This also helped in giving me more profound insight on how it is to feel suffering and loss more unfathomable than anything I could ever dream of or make up. One thing I learned from this book is that i should be thankful for the immense amount of freedoms that I have, especially the freedom of religion. Another thing that I learned from this book is how privileged I am and how thankful I should be to have my family and friends living with me or nearby and healthy and alive, also, a good education, and three full meals per day. I also learned that you shouldn't judge a book by its cover. These things were things that Wladyslaw Szpilman didn't get to experience during much of this book because he didn't have the rights and benefits that I have today. Finally, because Szpilman didn't judge a German soldier when he discovered him, his life was spared in the end and he was not captured or killed.
I would most definitely recommend The Pianist to students or adults interested in world history or World War II and to those who enjoy a good and exciting book that is actually true. It also involves some intense detail of certain events, but its written incredibly well and does not get too gory into the details. This book is definitely very interesting. Sometimes it seems like its fictional because the events don’t seem plausible because they are so horrendous and unimaginable, but Spzilman uses vivid word choice and description to make these events seem realistic. Also for this reason, the book is very interesting because these descriptions make it seems so real, and the nonfiction basis of it makes you think twice about how to treat others and to be careful of one’s judgments.

Unforgettable

A fan of the movie, I had to grab this ebook when I saw it was on sale for $1.99. While the movie is excellent, as usual, the book is even better. It was difficult to read, but hard to put down. The subject matter is intense, but necessary. Much of the book covers Szpilman's life in the Warsaw ghetto. We see what life was like living trapped inside the ghetto, with freedoms slowly being stripped away and the Jewish population becoming increasingly nervous at the uncertainties that lie ahead.

Szpilman finds himself alone and fighting for his life by hiding in various places in Warsaw, often in dangerously close approximation to the Nazi militia. What I find so compelling is the fact that, instead of being bitter and crying out against those who killed most everyone he knew and loved, Szpilman pays tribute to the German officer who discovered his hiding place, and, instead of killing him on the spot, coaxed Szpilman from the brink of death by bringing him food and a warm coat, as well as news of the German Nazi's impending fall from power.

Such a powerful story! If you enjoyed the film, you'll enjoy the book.

WW ll story true story

Wladyslaw Szpilman wrote this true story of his days as a Jewish prisoner
in the ghetto of Warsaw. Szpilman is a classically trained pianist. He is
from a close and loving musical Jewish family. The book was first published
in Poland after the war ended. However, it was not well received by the Poles.
In later years Szpilman's 12 year old son found the book and read it. He
promised himself he would tell his fathers story. It was republished in the U S in 1999.
It is well written,easy to read and a new perspective on those years in "Jewish Hell."
When the book was republished Szpilman was still living, preforming and writing music.
He is well known and respected as a musician in Poland. I highly recommend this book.

Wonderful purchase, strongly recommend!

What can I say? Jason McDonald's books are some of the best bar none. I have some of his other marketing books and love every one. They are a wealth of information! What I find interesting is that even though they share some the of the same advice, and overlap some in subject matter, there is ALWAYS a lot of new information in each book written. You need to read the title of this book, because Mr. McDonald elaborates on each social media platform in depth. His books contain links to his website where you can register free to get dozens of free worksheets to help you pull it together in order to manage and take control of your social media marketing efforts.
I'm about to graduate with a BA within six classes, and preferably work from home. I'm actively working on learning to build my brand both through my private website and social media. I am learning tons of things I never knew (thought I knew a lot, but apparently not enough); the best part is that is doesn't take a lot of money to do these things, just time and patience (time is my most needed commodity at this point, but I'll get there).
Buy this book and get the links and tons of information you need-you won't regret it. I dare you to buy it and NOT find something you don't like about it!

Everyone can use this!

First off, let me brag about shipping. Some orders take months to get here, some take a couple weeks, but this took days. The reason I feel the need to mention this is because the quicker you order something and it ships, the quicker you can get down to it, right? The content is just as to-the-point as the outside is. However, though the content doesn't waste time adding unnecessary side stories and irrelevant information, it's far from boring! I find it very entertaining to read, and it's all broken down into blocks, sections, subsections, and tutorials. It's a very step-by-step guide with literally anything you will need. To my surprise, McDonald even included snapchat and pinterest which aren't considered legitimate platforms as widely as that of amazon or youtube. Within these, he even mentioned programs you could use to boost the effects of using the applications. As you can see, he left no details out! He guides you step-by-step, showing you exactly how to either boost your presence for potential job recruiters, or shows you how to build your own brand into a legitimate, functional essence.

All in all, the genius behind this book (as well as quite a few others- check them out, seriously!) is not one to doubt. He covers every single point, prepares you for any possible outcome, and is ready for any question you may have- with a very thorough answer! If you need help creating an "Internet you", making yourself known through the usage of social platforms, or touching up the dynamics you already go by, this is for you! It's well worth the buy.

I always look forward to new publications from the SEO mastermind, Jason McDonald. He presents complex technical information in an easy to understand manner that is punctuated with his special brand of humor. I have been on his webinar list for many years and find his live presentations to be equally as informative and entertaining as his books and workbooks.

Jobs are still difficult to find in 2016, and likely will remain elusive for some years to come. Jason's JOB SEARCH & CAREER BUILDING WORKBOOK provides job seekers a plethora of options, tips, tricks, and solid suggestions that will greatly increase the likelihood of the reader getting hired into a lucrative position.

Three Hundred Pages (right, not the 7 or 12 page garbage often titled THE ULTIMATE JOB SEEKER GUIDE TO THIS AND THAT or some such crap!) chock full of real plans and strategies that incorporate your web presence and social media savvy. OR, if you have neither, Jason will guide you into building both a compelling web presence and social media platform that will get the attention of potential employers.

Unless you are four years old and still pitching temper tantrums for a living, this workbook is for you! If you follow my reviews on Amazon, you know I am very harsh on the garbage producers. This workbook is flawlessly written and formatted. The material is professionally presented without fluff or filler. That is because Jason is not some GET RICH EBOOK AUTHOR.....he lives this stuff on a daily basis. He teaches classes online and offline, conducts routine webinars, and has provided a gracious OPEN DOOR to his HUGE, BULGING BRAIN and all the information within. Jason has the Heart of a Teacher and the Spirit of a Helper. You can get the answers you seek, and turn them into a lucrative career.
