A Must-Read For Success-Minded Entrepreneurs

I've read every one of Dan Kennedy's books, hundreds of his newsletters and have traveled long distances and at great expense to see him speak in person over 20 times.

So I fully expected to find simply a rehashing of his basic (and brilliant) principles in this book.

I'm thrilled to report how wrong I was.

Not only did I uncover some new golden nuggets that opened my eyes and caused me to make a few fundamental and important changes to my current focus and marketing strategies, but Dan's "reasoned and psychic predictions" detailed in Chapter 19 have already influenced the way I and some of my clients have decided to approach our businesses going forward.

I had previously given some thought to making these improvements, partly from being a serious Dan Kennedy student over the years, but the well-reasoned and extremely well-documented points made in this book were the final push I needed to decide to go full force to implement these strategies.

Don't be left out in the cold along with 98% of small business owners and entrepreneurs; inhale every word of this book (the case study contributions from the various co-authors are a tremendous bonus) and then make a plan and promise to yourself to IMPLEMENT what Dan Kennedy teaches.

Great Book To Make You Think

First, I'm going to get the bad out of the way:

The Bad: It's a sales book, not meaning teaching you how to sell, but selling to you Dan Kennedy and related authors programs - it's repetitive of many of his other books.

The Good: It's still a great book for thinking about the issues and coming up with ideas in a more defined manner. I think this is one of the best in the No B.S. series.

If you sell, buy the book, it's low cost with a lot of great information. Value for the dollar it's a "no brainer" as they say. Just remember that it's also a "sales" book - meaning trying to sell to you and you won't be disappointed. If you expect it to be 100% real content, you will be disappointed - I went in knowing what to expect and have used at least 15% of the material in the book while mentoring others and in my own offices.

The book has some great statistics and I like the fact that it defines the group at the "Leading Edge" Boomers and seniors, rather than all boomers and seniors. The examples are good and the reading style is enjoyable in a laid back, but informative way.

4 Stars - a weak 4 stars, I felt 3 was too low considering the current nature of the material (it's up to date). If you read this review in 2 years from when this is posted, consider this a 3 star review.

I got this for detailed reference since i wanted to refresh my memory on certain skills and other things, i've been working in an assisted living facility for a year now, and you can really forget some skills working in one of these places, anyway, i just got the book today and was reading over it, and it seems to have some very good info, much better than the book that was given to me when i was going to the CNA classes, it's easy to read and understand, but does not have the appearence of something that a child would read, like my other CNA textbook did, it also has multible choice questions at the end of each chapter with the answers in the back of the textbook, so this can also be used by the instructor, i have not watched the enclosed CD yet though, but i'm sure its worth a watch,all in all, the book is worth the forty bucks, even if you are not interested in being a CNA, the info in it can be useful.

BOUGHT WRONG BOOK BUT GLAD OF IT

Everyone in my class bought the 4th edition of this book. However, the material is very similar despite the chapters being slightly off. Somethings in the 4th edition were given their own chapter. However, the 3rd edition has just as much current and up to date information. If you want a cheaper version of a new edition this book may be a low cost option for anyone low on cash who wants to start a CNA program or even study for the exam on their own. Very thorough and informative.

Great illustrated guide for older children

Not only a great childrens book but also one of the best books written by grandmaster Raymond Keene (who has written more than 100). He seems to have picked the eyes out of the best of his previous works and summarised them in an easy to understand guide that appeals to kids and adult beginners.

As the other reviewer says its many many illustrations are terrific and designed to catch the eye encouraging kids (and adults)to read on. Almost every page has at least one picture or chess board shot.

It starts with an interesting history of the game and ends with biographies of world champions, discussion of computer chess and resources for further learning about chess. In between it covers the basics of pieces and how they move, and has quite comprehensive sectiions on openings, the middlegame, and endgame/checkmates.

It goes into detail that is a welcome surprise for a childrens guide. For example he covers the "more difficult" checkmate by knight and bishop briefly in an easy to understand illustrated way when adult books on checkmate endings written by so called experts avoid discussing at all! So Ray Keene really know what he is talking about and explains it simply and well.

As well as the many illustrations, there are plenty of summary boxes, and quizzes with answers at each step of the book. There are also several complete classic games which are used to explain key concepts. This makes learning easy and it proceeds in simple steps from basic to progressively more complex concepts.

The edition I have is from the 1980s which you might think makes it out of date. But for a beginner to intermediate it is still one of the best books to learn from particularly for children. I rate this as a classic childrens chess book which will be hard to equal. (A worthy and up to date competitor is the Usborne Complete Internet Chess Book (see my review)). This book by Ray Keene is more suitable for older children as it is more wordy and goes into more detail for more difficult concepts (eg the bishop and knight checkmate mentioned above)

In short a great book. You may need to buy it second hand or search the net for a copy as it may not be readily available. But it will be well worth the effort to get it and enjoy every page.

Perfect for bathroom reading.

Honestly, a good little book for putting on the back of the toilet.

Interesting topics, nice little anecdotes, and a quick read. Good for hanging out on the porcelain throne for a bit and losing yourself in the stories.

A few stories caused me to bookmark and research further, which takes you down the rabbit hole that is Wikipedia.

Good read. Nice and compact book too.

Don't waste your money

Although I found the content interesting enough, there was no depth! I mean I read this cover to cover in about an hour. Every "story" or "fact" is dedicated to 2 pages. About 3 paragraphs a bunch of illustrations or pictures that are really of not much need and some small type "other facts". I would have rather had a list of the facts and read wiki instead. Not worth the money!

200 Pages of WOW!

In the past, I have typically not been one for advocating the idea of revising history as we know it, but this book has caused me to wonder if the lessons from the past that have been taught to so many of us have amounted to a series of partially distorted articles, at best, or a pack of lies, at worst.
In one account, there was a leading nineteenth-century American literary figure who wrote a fictional work on one of the most famous explorers from the late 1400's. It portrayed this particular individual as mainly a visionary who overcame the superstitions of his time in order to make great discoveries. Though this picture might be partly true, a key issue brought forth was entirely fictional. Nevertheless, this particular book became very popular as a required reading for schoolchildren and over time, because of the heroic elements espoused, the tales were so popular that people wanted to believe them to be factual. Since then, this author's version of this explorer's events "would long endure in the national consciousness" and be immortalized as history as it actually happened. Talk about a paradox: to be regarded as someone who would go down in history as someone who overcame myths in such a way that it, itself, is another myth. Sheesh!!
Though many a fact finder might wish that this particular legend could be isolated as the only fairy tale that has been misconstrued for truth, The Greatest Stories Never Told reveals to the reader that this is not so. There are other accounts that show that our significant historical events are not always due to forthright purposes set out by forthcoming, stout individuals. Sometimes random elements come into play � la The Butterfly Effect that can have a significant impact upon the outcome of a war. For instance, without giving away the details, so little as one piece of paper might have prevented General George Washington's rise to greatness against the British.
In sum, The Greatest Stories Never Told is a fascinating book. In my opinion, it can set forth arguments and debates covering other specialized fields, especially philosophy, political science, physics, and theology. I have always been convinced that we have a tendency to portray history the way we want to either remember it or learn it, but the manner in which some of these bits and pieces have been espoused for decades and centuries is quite disturbing.

If it isn't air conditioning or waving palm fronds over a block of ice, I've never heard of it. The previously abstruse concepts of steam heat now make perfect sense. I'm turning pages faster than a John Grisham novel. Thank you for giving the Dead Men such a clear, understandable, and fascinating voice. Essential

This book is an absolute essential for anyone with steam heat. I think that Dan's other book, The Lost Art of Steam Heating, is targeted more to heating contractors and people with seriously "knuckleheaded" systems (messed up systems). This book is not as in-depth, but it does still cover the major fundamentals fairly well.

If you have steam heat, this book can help you get the most out of your system. It will show you how to make it run more quietly, more efficiently, more effectively, and how to make it last much longer. Many of the things in the book are things that an average home-owner can tackle, but it still isn't too basic for a very handy home-owner. Even if you have no interest in doing the work yourself, I think you should still get this book. Steam heat really is a lost art, and there aren't a lot of steamheads our there who know what their doing (though Dan's site heatinghelp.com can help you find the ones that do). This book can help you be sure that the people you hire are doing the right thing and not making your system worse.

Dan writes clearly and humorously. He has a knack for explaining technical topics in a way that is both clear and comprehensive. My wife has no interest in steam heating, but she is tempted to read the book based on me sharing some of the passages. It really is a joy to read.

If you're new to steam heat, this is a great companion book to Dan Holohan's other two books. Beyond that, this book delves into more advanced areas of steam heat that are perfect for a homeowner to know about. Having never worked with a steam heat system before, I comfortably understand how mine works now.

A Book Addressing the Realities of Listening Prayer

This book was one of the most nurturing I have found on the subject of prayer. Leanne Payne, unlike many other authors coming coming from a Charismatic background, emphasizes the fact that prayer and a relationship with Christ is simple persistence, and work. While other authors say this with their words, I saw this "persistence and work" theme emphasized over, and over. Her book erased any thought of a "quick and easy" relationship; her emphasis centers on Christ, and Christ alone.
My only criticism is my desire, even need, to have more examples. I appreciated her narrative, and her use of Scriptural authority. However, real life examples, woven into the text, would have been helpful. She gave some examples (especially in her chapter in Chapter 12 on "How God Speaks to His Children"), but more would have been helpful to place her discussion into a context. Also, she was extremely circumspect in detailing one of her own experiences; after reading it, I did not know what she was trying to express, or what, precisely, occurred.
This criticism is the only reason for my four-star rating. If I could, I would give a "4.5" or a "4.6." This book is one to be read several times, and I highly recommend it.

I have been using a prayer journal based on Payne's model for nearly a year and have seen her ideas move me towards greater intimacy with Christ. Other volumes she's written are more complex, but this is quite readable. Her emphasis is always to look straight to Christ, not to a method.

Useful guide to journaling and listening to God

I found Listening Prayer especially helpful in two ways.

My former attempts to keep a prayer journal have all come to naught -- perhaps because as an ordinary layman I seldom have enough time to really listen. Payne has given me a new way to organize my journaling and my prayer times as sections in a looseleaf binder. One section covers listening through Scripture, another praise, another confession, and so on. Contents of each section vary over time. Payne suggests sample materials to set the tone for each.

The second half of the book, a practical guide to listening to God in general, springs from Payne's own experiences, both from her initial involvement in the charismatic revival and from her extensive healing prayer ministry. Chapter 12 includes unusually detailed descriptions -- feelings, sights, sounds -- of how God communicates guidance, wisdom, or encouragement to us today (as distinct from the completed "special revelation" of the Scriptures). Since we are often mistaken in thinking we're hearing from God, Payne emphasizes the importance of having frank partners in accountability and the danger of focusing on our own feelings -- which she refers to in The Healing Presence: Curing the Soul Through Union with Christ as "the disease of introspection."

While Payne is sometimes called "cerebral," this volume is practically oriented.

Great book for those looking for results

This is a really good book for those who are new to self hypnosis or those who are looking for better results.

I recorded some of the scripts into my voice recorder, then lie on the bed and listen to them. Excellent results.

So far I've used the Stress Reduction and Self Esteem scripts (these two are worth the price of the book).

I'm always looking for a good hypnosis book to give me new ideas and this one is great!

From theory, to problems and solutions

Those who are familiar with hypnosis and hypnotherapy know that one of most important steps is to spot the client's problem.
This book offers a general overview of hypnosis in the first few chapters. Then, the authors offer a clear and comprehensive overview of various problems (e.g. weight loss, depression, smoking cessation, self-esteem and motivation,..) and dig into the reasons which might have caused these problems, proposing an easy-to-read and understand theoretical framework added with several examples, case studies, and teaching how to structure inductions and suggestions, depending on the problem itself.
This is the kind of book one might well treat as a little manual to gain some new insights with ref. to various problems a client would like to solve.
I'd recommend it to those who are interested in hypnotherapy and aim for a better understanding of these processes and for a positive change.
